Norm violation

Norm violated

I violated this norm by saying hallo and starting a Conversation with every stranger that I met on my way to town. The social norm that exists in the society about greeting people requires that we should greet family members, friends, and acquaintances. However, I decided to violate this norm by greeting strangers that I met. When violating this norm, I had to say hallo to the stranger and start a conversation providing people with the assumption that I knew them. For those people who responded to my greetings, I insisted on starting a conversation as we stood at the spot. I asked the strangers where they were going, how their day was, and what they thought about the day’s weather condition.

The setting in which I violated the norm was in the street. I choose the street heading to town because it provided me with the highest chance of meeting strangers. The street is always full of people walking towards and from town; thus, it was the best setting for my experiment. When in the street I was able to meet different people who would respond in a different manner. The street also offered me with an opportunity of observing how people were responding as this was in an open environment.

Feeling before, during, and after

Before conducting this experiment, I was very anxious over how people would react from my behavior. More importantly, I was afraid because of the different reactions of people. Thus, I had fear that some people would react by maybe pushing me away or even punching me, which would be more embarrassing. When I experimented with the first stranger, I felt calm and relaxed, and I was ready to continue with the experiment. The first person was not polite, but he walked away when I started asking personal issues. After I had completed my experiment, I was happy because it was much easy than what I had anticipated.

Response of people

As I was violating this norm, I observed different response from people. Some people responded with irritation, humor, fear, and other emotions. Everybody responded by saying hallo back; however, when I started a conversation with them; some hurried away as they were trying to evade my conversation. Out of the group of people that I greeted, only one person engaged in the conversation and even asked some few questions. A group of ladies that I greeted responded and when I joined their conversation, they all stared at me without saying anything, and one lady asked the others if they knew me. When they said no, they decided to walk away. After people responded to my greeting, a majority of people just walked past me ignoring the fact that I was trying to talk to them.

This activity taught me a lot about social norms in our society. A norm that is well understood in the society is how to behave with strangers. According to the society, greeting people in the street and even going to the extent of starting a conversation with strangers is unaccepted and not appropriate. This was evident when strangers stared at me when I started a conversation. This experiment enabled me to learn how social norms are observed in the society.
