            The article also points out that, youth engage in crime due to peer pressure and rebellion against their parent’s authority (Maseko, 2009). Many crimes that are committed are linked to mobilized groups of the youth. The groups are formed by young people who influence each other and later end up forming a large gang of thugs. Others are influenced by drugs according to Erickson (2001). Many of the youths confess using drugs and later find themselves into crime. Drugs are known to be the root-cause to many of the social evils that are experienced in the society. They influence the youth by giving them a false feeling of wellness for a short time and then return to the initial state. In that condition of wellness, they can engage into any form of crime. According to the report, youths get into crime due to joblessness in quest for money.

            Functionalist theory examines how the society remains stable and how to maintain the social order. Every aspect of the society is interpreted in how it enhances the stability of the society. Each part of the society functions for the betterment of the whole and its contribution to the stability examined. The different parts of the society are interrelated and all depend on each other.

Conclusion

            Youths associate themselves with many types of crime and their reasons of engagement vary from one individual to another. The fact that cannot be ignored is that, this vice has been on the rise in the recent past and requires proper intervention measures. Some causes can be controlled through guidance and counseling and others requires more efforts.
