I have a thing for BMOC storylines.  About once a week I find myself looking through the kindle store and when these pop up, I can usually be counted on to buy them.  I prefer ones where the heroine isn’t a simpering drip and since this type of story can easily go that way, sometimes I am lucky and others I am not.

Slam is one where I got lucky.  Adelaide Vikander has Asperger’s Syndrome and reacts to social cues in a way that most people don’t understand.  She has spent most of her life memorizing reactions and learning the appropriate response to situations.  She might not understand why she is supposed to react like that but she is smart enough to know if she wants to not stand out, she has to act how everyone else does.

Adelaide has been friends with Ender and Endric for most of her life.  She was raised with them and now has been sent to live in America with them.  Ender is to be her social guide.  Ender and Endric are extremely sought after on campus.  They are attractive, tennis stars, have a lot of money and are basically the guys everyone either wants to be like or be with.

“Adelaide,” I’d said through gritted teeth. “I can already tell you’re twenty types of trouble.”

“Ender,” she’d replied sweetly. “I can already tell we’re gonna be bosom buddies.”

Ender is a bit of manwhore yet is very honest and unapologetic about it.  As the hero, you like him.  Ender and Adelaide do not start out together but you can see the slow progression as stronger feelings start to develop.  Adelaide is different from other women and that difference is what starts to pull Ender in.  She is very literal and there is no bullshit in her actions and words.  She is also very likable and what you see is what you get.

Because Adelaide is so straightforward there isn’t much game playing between her and Ender.  Ender has several women who are regulars and one scene happens where Adelaide sees them together.  Ender and Adelaide are not together at the time so it isn’t cheating.  What happens is almost a more clinical viewing from Adelaide side and a serious turn on knowing she is watching, from Ender’s side.  Adelaide is a virgin and very curious so this scene kick starts a sexual relationship for the paid.

Though they are involved sexually Adelaide does end up several other people.  It isn’t as bad as it sounds because her character is so refreshing and there is no malice or even a hint of it feeling like cheating.  The scenes actually serve to push Ender deeper into a relationship with Adelaide and make him realize how he actually feels about her.

Overall, this is a very refreshing, different and completely enjoyable book.  I loved watching Ender fall for Adelaide.  She is a great heroine and very well written.  There are times when Adelaide tends to go on for paragraphs but most of her tangents are pretty funny and will keep the reader entertained.  Slam is super sexy and these characters will capture your heart with their complexity and with just how well they fit together.  I would love to have another book with this couple to see where they end up.  Final grade- B+
