SAN ANTONIO, April 3 (UPI) -- An Air Force base instructor in Texas, one of 14 to go on trial for sexual misconduct, was sentenced to 60 days after pleading guilty, officials said.
Staff Sgt. William Romero, an Iraq veteran, who admitted to having had illicit relationships with four women and having committed adultery, was given 30 days hard labor, confined to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland for an additional 30 days and reduced in rank to airman, the San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday.
Romero was spared a bad-conduct discharge, which would have made him ineligible for medical retirement benefits for injuries he sustained in an Iraq mortar explosion. Romero also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the blast, the Express-News reported.
Romero had faced a special court-martial, under which the maximum sentence would have been a year in prison and the bad-conduct discharge.
Thirty-three instructors at the base have been investigated during the misconduct scandal with 63 recruits and technical school trainees. Unlike Romero's, many of the cases involve non-consensual sexual assaults, the Express-News reported.
Defense attorney Capt. Nichole Torres emphasized the women were consensual in the misconduct.
