Writing a first draft is always a daunting prospect. But if you want to be a Writer, an author, a novelist, a paperback writer, whatever you want to call it, you have to write. You have to go through the hard slog of producing that first pile of words. That huge lump of text that, if the truth be known, will have a good proportion of it end up in the bin with the other rubbish you’ve written over the years.
So, my target on this first draft is 140,000 words of which I will happliy throw away and whittle it down to 90-100k for the 2nd draft.
So far, The Brittle Land 1st draft stands at 12,000 words. Here’s to a couple of months of intense writing. This is my new writing challenge.
And by the way, I won’t be throwing the rubbish I write out. I always keep it in a little pile, discretely tucked out the way, just in case I can use bits of it again. You never know when a string of words may come in handy.
