Coronavirus: A Sobering Thought

In his opening remarks at the March 3 media briefing on Covid-19, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated: “Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.”

Bear that in mind when you go about your daily business. 3.4%  means it’s more than 3 times as deadly as normal flu. To some people who are at a higher risk level, diabetics like myself, this is not something to be taken lightly. Having had swine flu in January that laid me up in bed for three days and took weeks to get over, I realise how precarious a situation people like me are in. I’m 65 years old and COVID-19 could well do someone of my age, who has underlying health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure, a lot of damage, if not prove fatal.

Limiting the risk is essential, but equally going into shops and panic buying isn’t helping anyone. What my wife and I are doing is going about our normal routine, but thinking carefully before we undertake any journeys by car in order to limit our exposure and the chance of passing it on if we already have it.
