Living in Cyprus: The Flying Virus

Air travel is wonderful because it takes you to far away places that you may never have seen in your lifetime if you had traveled by train, boat or camel. But air travel has one downside, aircraft can and probably are germ ridden places. I know the air on passenger jets is filtered, but that’s not going to help if the person next to you has a cold, or if your stopover in Doha has thousands of potential virus carriers flowing around you.

So, there we were at the beginning of our trip to Australia in January, full of cold. It wasn’t a problem, just your normal head cold and no debilitating side effects. But coming back to Cyprus has awoken the medical Kraken in us.

While we were away, Cyprus was hit by storms and a lot of rainfall. Fast forward to our return home and the whole house is damp. That’s because Cypriot houses tend to be damp due to the way they are built, lots of concrete, no airflow or damp course. Within a few days, despite using a dehumidifier to clear the damp, we were both struck down with sneezing, coughing and a generally debilitating virus that has sapped our strength and left us as weak as kittens. It seems Cyprus is in the grip of some mini viral outbreak that is not only debilitating but long lasting. Put this on top of just getting over our Aussie colds and you can guess how weak we have become. I’ve only just got back to writing after days of not lifting a finger.

The truth be known, a virus that spreads itself well has to be airborne and that’s the downside to air travel. I wouldn’t mind, but our trip to Australia cost thousands and the virus gets the trip for free!
