You may have noticed on occasions I mention the poor drivers in Cyprus, though last time I wrote a piece it was about how much drivers over here had improved. I take it all back.
Yesterday, my wife and I almost met our maker. Here in Cyprus we drive on the left, as in Britain. On an empty road that runs between Akrotiri and Limassol we were driving along minding our own business when a silver car appeared in the distance. I was driving, not too fast, and as the vehicle closed the gap between us I noticed the driver was a woman, with blond hair, wearing sunglasses. At around two meters (six feet) from us her vehicle suddenly veered onto our side of the road. With trees on our left-side and the approaching car on our right there was nowhere else to go so I quickly veered left and the oncoming vehicle passed, leaving us centimeters to spare on both sides of our vehicle. If we had been travelling a little slower I would probably be writing this in hospital… or maybe even heaven.
I looked in my rear-view mirror and she was still crossing onto our lane, then presumably woke up and corrected her course and was soon on the correct side of the road.
I put it down to a liquid lunch and her falling asleep at the wheel, who knows. But I can safely say that experience was never on my bucket-list!
