Black Book Future is a GoFundMe that works towards the future of the black book. Black Bookstores, Free Black Spaces, and the free exchange of ideas outside of Academia are the fertile grounds black ideas and black books grow from.
Our mission is to invest in the future of the black book by stimulating conversation, consulting black bookstores, and developing a vision for a more dynamic diversity in the publishing industry.
Free Black Space grew out of the work of black bookselling. From 2009 through 2019-Free Black Space published poems, essays, and work about the concept of the black. Our goal was to offer a place where African-American authors who practice scholarship and the craft of writing could engage an audience. Part of this mission was black book future.
One strange feature of the Black Book is that it is rarely published by Black Presses. During the ten years of Free Black Space the black book accounted for significant growth in the larger market, even as the amount of black bookstores and black presses decreased.
As we move forward, Black Book Future will work to promote black bookstores through consulting. Karibu expertise in the mechanics of running a bookstore chain will help to problem solve operational, financial, and marketing issues for black bookstores. In addition, we will promote author events, and commission a history of Karibu Books.
To date we have collected close to 1K in donations and have dedicated six hours of consulting to black bookstores with an estimated twenty within the next month.
If you are concerned about the future of the black book and black bookstores, please support black book future. The link to the go fund me is here.
