Emma Watson.

Famous Women in today’s culture represent a variety of different values and goals. For the women in their early twenties that fill university campuses globally, it can be difficult to discern which household names are actually worth looking up to. From Kim Kardashian to Carrie Underwood, young women have a diverse selection to choose from. One young woman, though, stands above the rest. Emma Watson is a 25-year-old trailblazer with a passion for women’s rights and an eye for fashion.

Watson has rose above her Harry Potter co-stars to become a name that means more than just screen presence. Since the final movie in the multi-million dollar franchise, Watson earned a degree from Brown University, become a fashion icon, and fought for women’s rights as an ambassador at the United Nations. With all of these accomplishments, it is no wonder that she has become a role model for college-aged women across the world.

Our Shared Shelf began as a project for Watson to spread female literature and has become widely popular with women and Instagram users.

As an active feminist, Watson uses her cultural influence to spread her ideas of equality, without the diminishing of men, to women across various platforms. One project that received a lot of attention this past year was the creation of Watson’s own feminist book club called “Our Shared Shelf.” The actress was inspired by her work with the UN Women sector and has been eager to share the empowering books and essays on women’s rights.

For the past two years, Watson has been advocating for the campaign “He for She,” which is a movement from UN Women that is working to create global Gender Equality. At the launch of the movement in 2014, Watson spoke on the subject of feminism and how it matters to all.

“I decided I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me,” said Watson at the conference. “Men– I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender Equality is your issue, too.”

As a college graduate, the young Watson has taken the subject of sexual assault on campuses very seriously. Partnering with the He For She movement, she traveled to ten different universities across various nations to discuss gender equality and sexual violence against college women.

Despite being a wealthy and glamorous actress, Watson strives to connect with women of all backgrounds and histories. Her involvement touches the hearts of women and national leaders across the board. Recently, Watson visited the new Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, to promote her gender equality campaigns and to hear the stories of Canadian feminist activists. On Sep. 28, Trudeau and Watson attended the One Young World summit which was designed to empower global leaders ages 18-30 years old to make lasting impacts and connections.

With all of these activities, it is a miracle the young activist is able to have time for much else. However, Watson still devotes attention to her personal life by enjoying time with her boyfriend, Mack Knight, and her family. Following in the footsteps of his older sister, Alex Watson has made British women melt with his break into the modeling world. The siblings are close and consult each other on all things fashion.

In 2009, Watson began her style resume by becoming the face of the Burberry campaign. Following that success, the fashion icon has worked with industry staples such as Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel. The actress is also known to flash the names of famous British designers across the red carpet.

However, Watson stayed true to nature and began working with the company People Tree to promote eco-friendly clothing. Most recently, Watson announced her collaboration with the ethical brand ZADY to produce ecologically sustainable clothing that is made from farms with quality animal treatment, and created by women who will receive a proper living wage from their work. Not to mention, the clothes are chic and comfortable.

As a role model for young women, Emma Watson can’t be beat. She is dedicated to her fellow women and cultured in style, art, and global human connection. At such a young age, Watson has created a name for herself not only in the film industry but as an activist and leader.
