Oh my goodness how has it taken me so long to read Cinder! The fairytale/space opera genre mix is one I've recently discovered and absolutely love, it mixes so many things that I like up in one book. Add to that that Cinder has been on my kindle for 3 years, and the fact a lot of bloggers seem to love it, and I've definitely missed out by not reading it sooner!
Cinder was a great Character, she was strong and independent, but wasn't afraid to be attracted to someone, or act on some of her desires. She learnt a lot about herself over the course of the book and it just strengthened her as a character. She loved her step-sister, Peony, a lot, but her step-mother or legal guardian as Cinder preferred, and other step-sister were definitely not her favourite people that's for sure.
Cinder was a talented mechanic, and that side of things came into play a lot. Her job was what brought her and the Prince, Kai, together and being a cyborg had it's own problems. The world that Cinder inhabited had some dystopian qualities, that I do hope get sorted out in later books.
The relationship between Kai and Cinder was sweet. I felt like Kai acted his age, and was a little sheltered, but his opening up towards Cinder was a great way for the two of them bond. It was also clear that he loved his people and his duty too, which was another added side of his character.
There was a twist that I had figured out pretty early on, as well as a slightly smaller related twist that I'd thought was the case too. However in the terms of fairytales it worked well. In fact the fairy tale elements in general worked well and I really got the feel of Cinderella from the story.
The bad guy was definitely intriguing too. As the Lunar Queen, she has a lot of power and is a menace to several of the characters, I think she's definitely going to be an interesting character going forward into the other books.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series, and from Meyer, it was a fantastic read.
