Chaddi Buddies: Oswald Pereira

Chaddi Buddies by Oswald Pereira is the story of a boy and his friends, very different from each other but united by a strong sense of friendship and affection for each other, who sets off on a journey to discover themselves and the world around them. Yet it will be the pilgrimage of truth, which will bring to light new findings on people around them but also about themselves.

Robert Pereira's buddies Anand and Baloo live on a hut on a small hill with their elder brother Dattya,  the village cricket team captain. They are sons of a domestic help. The village bullies make fun of Robert for his gaucherie and weakness and nickname him ‘Pondya’, a laid-back, frail chap. Robert will have to fight the village bullies and wipe out the disgraceful 'Pondya' tag to his name.

From this moment everything changes and with a new and stronger faith, Robert will find the courage to face the harsh reality. With an extraordinary story of everyday heroism that can imprint itself in the hearts of readers of today as those of a century ago, the book leaves an indelible memory as it talks about youth, love, friendship and ambiguous relationships.

The protagonist of this novel is the youth. A youth who reminds us of ourselves with a young victim and accomplice of irreversible social progress, and the harsh judgment of those who seem never to have been young. The novel gives glory not just to relationships, but the character of Robert who is willing to do anything, just to not tear the roots to his links, albeit ambiguous. And he would do anything to protect it.

It's a novel not only about friendship and brotherhood, which is deeper than it appears, but it is also a novel about the discovery and self-respect for others. The village is not just a postcard place but it is an exhausting long walk that highlights the character of the protagonist who feels this experience as the conquest of his own piece of sky, and then the end is a genuine mystical experience, which goes beyond the conventions.

The nice beautiful text and the smooth and flowing style can immediately capture the reader's attention and fascinate them to the events narrated. The characters are well described and the linear texture proves, it can be valuable and interesting. The plot is unique and original, and at the same instant touching, given the freshness of a writing capable of getting hooked into its pages.

The book definitely lacks narrative tension but overall is a good proposal for the contemporary literary scene. With a slow pace, the book is clocked with feelings and reflections on life. The story is not only simple and disturbing, but also tremendously compelling. Among poignant sentimental shots the book tells a story undoubtedly pleasant and effective.

A novel that embraces different emotions from suspense to emotion, through the tenacity of a protagonist, who at any moment also risks losing the meaning of his life, his past moments and perhaps future, which encloses the courage and loyalty to life. It’s a book that teaches the values most important to deal with life, the difficulties and disappointments of everyday.

In conclusion, the author signs a thrilling novel, recommended to all those who want a change of scenery, flight and the inner journey.
