How to Kill Creativity (And How to Avoid These Bad Habits!)

Creativity is a feeling that we strive to get and maintain. The feeling of being creative makes us feel light, happy, joyful, and hopeful. Creativity is vital in our daily activities because it makes us feel alive. If one were to

describe creativity to someone who has never heard the word before, creativity is a burst of bright colours in an otherwise bleak situation. Having and maintaining creativity is a skill that every human should have. However, most people do not know that creativity is a skill and not just a fleeting emotion. You don’t have to wait for creativity all the time. You can chase after creativity. If you’re interested in learning how to kill creativity, this article is for you.

Habits influence your creative drive, so here are two ways to kill your creativity and five ways to revive and maintain your creativity.

  1. Too much screen time- Most of us spend hours scrolling aimlessly through social media to fill up the time. This is bad for our habit systems and our mental health.

When you’re waiting for a bus, on the bus or bored, do you find yourself clicking these applications? This means you’ve trained your brain to naturally seek out these applications every single time you’re bored. This is bad for creativity.

  1. Staying Indoors – Constantly staying indoors can also be bad for your mental health. We need fresh air, the sun and nature. This is especially important for those who live in cities where there is not much nature or scenery. It is important that you try to go outdoors for 30 minutes daily to take in the air and simply relax. Staying indoors always will eventually mess up your sleep schedule, which is terrible for creativity. If you want to learn how to kill creativity, simply stay indoors.

How to Revive Creativity

  1. Spend time off your phone – Phones are designed to be addictive. Social media is designed to be addictive, so do not feel ashamed if you struggle. You can overcome this addiction by making small steps and decisions to spend more time away from social media.
  1. Try to go outside more often – Going outside helps you relax and take your mind off worries. Go on walks and listen to your thoughts. You’ll be amazed at how many ideas you’ll come up with on a simple 10-minute walk. Going on walks is also an excellent alternative for working out. If you’re not a fan of the gym, you can go on walks or runs.
  1. Journal – While journaling is not for everyone, it is undoubtedly beneficial. Write your thoughts down once you wake up. If you’re not speaking or writing down your thoughts, they’ll weigh you down. Once you get rid of the negative thoughts and the worries you’ll realise you’re more creative than you thought, you were.
  1. Have a proper sleep schedule – Lack of sleep can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. You need to sleep and have a proper sleep schedule. If you’re sleepy, you’ll be tired, grumpy and those are not emotions that work well with creativity. A lousy sleep schedule is first in the handbook on how to kill creativity.
  1. Have a little book of ideas – Always carry around a small book to jot down your ideas. It is tempting to type out your thoughts in the notes app. However, a physical book is more tangible, and you’re less likely to forget about your ideas if you write them down.
