Hey guys, these are going to be quick and to the point reviews. I live in the Houston area and today is the first day that I’ve been able to get back to semi-normal operations. My family is safe. We didn’t take on any water in the house, although I have a lot of family, friends, and neighbors who did. Flood water is receding and Houstonians are already beginning clean up. I’ve seen a lot of things the last few days that have been devastating, but at the same time I’ve watched ordinary, every day people step up and do amazing, heroic things. I have never loved my city more than I do right now. #HoustonStrong #TexasStrong
WHAT I READ IN AUGUST:
Fire In His Embrace by Ruby Dixon – AMZ
There’s only one way to tame a dragon.
Emma Arroyo knows this. She also knows that the big golden dragon captured by her brother’s biker gang is in trouble, and it’s all her fault. He followed her scent, and now his life is in danger.
She has to fix this, somehow. If she could talk to the dragon, they could form a plan to escape, both of them. But the dragon’s mind is wild and full of uncontrollable, killing rage. There’s no reasoning with him. There’s certainly no freeing him, not when he’s like this. But Emma can’t leave without him.
There’s only one way to solve this problem – a mating. When Emma approaches Zohr to claim him as hers, she realizes just what it means to be a dragon’s mate, and how much she’s in over her head…
And she learns how fiercely possessive a drakoni male can be.
I blew through this on release day. I think this is my favorite of this series so far. Maybe because the set-up was a bit different and the heroine, Emma, already kind of knew what she had to do in order to communicate with Zohr.
The Verdict: More please. Although, with what happened at the very end I’m not sure what to expect.
Agent of Darkness by C.N. Crawford and Alex Rivers – AMZ
There’s a dark power growing within me. And I’m not sure I can control it.
The fae king wants me dead. His assassins tracked me down and nearly killed me— now they’re the ones lying lifeless in a pool of blood. But the price I’ve paid is too high. They hurt someone I love, and I burn for revenge.
I’m done watching from the sidelines. Following the seductive fae Roan, I join the rebels but find myself surrounded by suspicion at every turn. But with the strange new magic in my blood, no one trusts me anymore.
It’s the magic of fear, of terror, of nightmares. The king’s minions have given me another name: Mistress of Dread. My power is unstable and deadly, and to get my vengeance, I must learn to control it. Yet with fury boiling in my blood and desire for Roan kindling my heart, it seems like an impossible task.
FBI Agent, Pixie, Terror Leech, Mistress of Dread. Will I become a King Killer as well?
This is the third Book in this series and OMG. At the end of the previous installment Cass saved all of London from chaos and made her way back to Roan as promised. This book opens immediately where the last book left off, and as much as I’d like to say Roan welcomes her with open arms, he doesn’t. He’s a total dick to her. Again. Arghhhh. So she heads back to London with the idea that she wants to figure out her real mother’s identity. The rest of the book is a CRAZY ride. The death of a beloved character, war, revelations, Roan acting weird and trying not to be such an arsehole (sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing), sex, confusion, and betrayal. Um, wow.
The Verdict: Will definitely read the next in the series.
Mating Bite by Cynthia Eden – AMZ
Werewolf Carter Sinclair is on the hunt. He’s tracking a newly turned vamp, a beauty with bite named Lauren McIntosh. Hunting her is the easy part. After all, no one can hide from a wolf. But once Carter gets the vamp in his arms, his easy mission suddenly goes straight to hell.
One taste, one bite that should never have happened…and Carter is hooked—mind, body, soul. Nature has plans for him and Lauren. They’re to be mates, but there is a vicious vamp waiting in the dark—a killer who has already claimed Lauren as his.
Now Carter has a new mission—keep Lauren safe at all costs. Make her fall for him. And hide all of the very dark and dangerous secrets that fill his closet. He needs Lauren to trust him, he needs her to stay with him, and the last thing he wants is for Lauren to know just how deeply he’s already betrayed her. What she never knows can’t hurt her, right?
Their mating is forbidden, but Carter is about to break every werewolf and vamp rule out there in order to claim Lauren. And those fools who try to get in his way will find out just how deadly his beast can truly be…because there is no one in the world more important to a wolf…than his mate.
This was another fast, easy, paranormal, werewolf vs. vampire unless you happen to be mates story.
The Verdict: I’m more than ready for book three.
Beard in Mind by Penny Reid – AMZ
All’s fair in love and auto maintenance.
Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.
Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.
Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever.
She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words.
Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life.
The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean missing out on what matters most.
Cletus Winston has always been my favorite Winston. Until Beau came along that is. And Beau with all his helpful, sweet, understanding, loving, kind actions and words stole my heart. He and Shelly are wonderful together.
The Verdict: Penny Reid is a writing goddess. I love her.
WHAT’S UP NEXT:
Dustwalker by Tiffany Roberts – AMZ
A SYNTH SEARCHING FOR PURPOSE…
Walk. Scavenge. Destroy. Trade. A simple cycle that’s suited Ronin for one hundred and eighty-five years. With no clear grasp of his programming, the barren wasteland known as The Dust offers him purpose, a place where his armored undercasing, amped-up processors, and advanced optics can be put to use. The ramshackle towns on the edges of the waste serve merely as resupply stations between increasingly long treks. But one night — one human woman — makes him question everything.
A WOMAN WHO BRINGS HIM TO LIFE…
Lara Brooks struggles to survive under the strict rules imposed by the bots in Cheyenne. With her sister missing, she’s been on her own for weeks, and fears the worst. Her only hope comes from Ronin, a bot she catches spying on her. He promises to provide for Lara and search for her sister. All she has to do is dance. It should be easy; she’s done it before. But the longer she spends with Ronin, the harder it is to see him as just another bot.
A SANCTUARY HIDING DARK SECRETS…
In a city where humans are relegated to live in squalor, Ronin discovers a threat greater than any in the Dust — Warlord, Cheyenne’s tyrannical leader. When Ronin ignores the rules, he unwittingly puts Lara in danger. Warlord is as intolerant of disrespect as he is of mankind.
Warning: This book contains foul language, explicit sexual content, and violence and is intended for mature readers only.
I am currently 40% into this and enjoying.
How to Save an Undead Life by Hailey Edwards – AMZ
The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy, Book 1
Grier Woolworth spends her nights weaving spooky tales of lost souls and tragedies for tourists on the streets of downtown Savannah. Hoop skirt and parasol aside, it’s not a bad gig. The pay is crap, but the tips keep the lights on in her personal haunted mansion and her pantry stocked with ramen.
Life is about as normal as it gets for an ex-necromancer hiding among humans. Until the society that excommunicated Grier offers her a second chance at being more than ordinary. Too bad no one warned her the trouble with being extraordinary is it can get you killed.
Warning: This book contains one ex-con/ex-heiress with a pet zombie parakeet who lives next door to her ex-army/ex-crush. Brace yourself, we’re talking more exes than a pirate treasure map here.
I mean come on, read that warning. How could I not add this to my TBR list?
Tease by Ella Frank – AMZ
Tease – verb: to tantalize especially by arousing desire or curiosity often without intending to satisfy it….unless your name is Tate Morrison.
It’s been four years since Logan Mitchell walked into Tate’s life and irrevocably changed it. Four years since the sexy as sin lawyer dared him to try, and four years since Tate won his love.
Now, as they approach the next chapter of their lives Logan is determined they won’t end up like many of their friends. Settled. Domestic. Boring. However, that’s easier said than done. With busy careers and working odd hours, finding time for one another is becoming increasingly difficult.
But that sh*t isn’t going to fly with Logan or Tate.
The two of them are determined to compromise to get what it is they want, and what they want is each other.
Tease is the sexy, tantalizing continuation of the two men who stole your heart… and popped your cherry.
Yes, Tate and Logan are still waiting on me to get to them.
Gone for You by Riley Hart – AMZ
Oliver Hayes wears his heart on his sleeve, and his friends never let him forget it. Every Friday night spent at Wild Side, their favorite West Hollywood bar, Oliver’s lack of hookups becomes the hot topic. It’s not that he doesn’t want a good time. He just wants it to mean something, which is a lofty goal when he’s still pining after his childhood crush, Matt, who left ten years ago to start a new life in New York City.
Matt Daniels has always felt most at home seated at a piano. He might not have entirely fit in with his family and friends, but he was always able to find himself in music. Or at least he did before he gave up his dream a lifetime ago. Now, he has a successful modeling career and should be enjoying every second of it. Yet nothing feels right, and Matt fears he’s losing himself.
Just when Oliver decides to get over Matt for good, Matt waltzes back into LA. As Matt struggles to understand what he’s missing in his seemingly perfect life, he falls right back into leaning on Oliver for support. Things aren’t what they used to be between them, though. They tumble into bed together, and it’s hard not to continue ending up there. For the first time in years, Matt’s inspired to compose again, reigniting a spark he thought long extinguished.
But as always, Oliver can’t keep his heart in check, and soon Matt realizes he’s gone for Oliver too. The biggest question is, can he fully give himself to someone if he still hasn’t figured out how to love himself?
I’ve enjoyed this author in the past and I will admit to being drawn in by the cover.
A Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa- AMZ
Siren and soulmate to the King of Night, Callypso Lillis survived the clutches of Karnon, the mad king, and his twisted prison. But the nightmare isn’t over. Callie wears the physical reminders of her time as a captive, and mounting evidence suggests the Thief of Souls is still out there.
When a fae celebration thrusts Callie and her mate, Desmond Flynn, into the Kingdom of Flora, they take their investigation with them. But under the bright lights and striking blooms of the realm, they find there are more immediate issues to deal with. No place is more uniquely savage than the great fae halls, and no amount of bargains can save Callie from royal intrigues.
Fairies play dangerous games. Some want love, some want vengeance, some want flesh, and some want things too unspeakable to utter. One thing is for sure: no one is who they appear to be. Not even Des, who only grows more enigmatic with every passing secret.
But the Kingdom of Flora has its own secrets, from bleeding trees to branded slaves and missing guards. Something is stirring in the land of all that grows, and if Callie isn’t careful, it will claim everything and everyone she loves—and her along with it.
I actually forgot I had this still up. Seriously, it’s been a long summer.
