The Marlow Murder Club (Marlow Murder Club, book 1)

IN SHORT: This Murder Mystery Book featuring an elderly woman who decides to investigate a death is an entertaining, light read.

REVIEW

Judith Potts is 77 and quite happy with her life; she owns a mansion right on the river Thames and works from home creating crossword puzzles. She swims in the Thames and often gets around her town of Marlow by punting on the river. Life is pretty good and mostly uneventful. Then one evening while she is swimming she hears an exclamation and then a gunshot from the direction of her neighbor’s yard. When she gets home, she calls the police to report a shooting, but later she finds out nothing came of her report. Then, when she finds her neighbor dead, the police don’t treat it as a homicide. But Judith is sure it is, so she takes it upon herself to investigate.

Soon enough, there are two more murders, and Judith has acquired two helpers: dogwalker Suzie and housewife Becks. They use their connections, curiosity, and skills to try to bring justice to Marlow.

This novel is a fun and light murder mystery book. It’s a cozy mystery, so it’s just as much about the plucky investigators and the quaint English town as it is about the murders. The characters and story didn’t leave a strong impression or make me laugh as much as those from The Thursday Murder Club, for an example, but it’s definitely worth picking up.
