We could not pass up the opportunity to visit Kohanaiki’s $65,000,000 clubhouse at a new development on the Big Island for billionaires. Our friends know one of the Golf pros there to score us an invitation knowing full well that we were just there to be a looky-loo, although my friend stayed there as a guest of a member last year.

It was very extra with a secret door to the poker room, replete with private cigar humidor cubbies. The golf pro who took us around mentioned that he had been invited to play poker there by members. I am hoping that his host also staked him!

There were also private wine cubbies, with more in other locations as well. This is a clubhouse where no expense was spared to create a warm and luxurious experience.

I also appreciated that Native Hawaiian Culture was on full display throughout the facility. Kohanaiki is also sensitive to sustainability issues. My daughter, it turns out, had also visited the grounds this past January as part of her RISD illustration class on endangered plants.

…the Clubhouse deploys innovative, and in some cases unique technologies, such as the heat-exchange system that extracts heat from the air-conditioning system to heat the pools, and the solar powered desalination and reverse osmosis system that provides the 1 million gallons of water per day needed to water the entire golf course, lessening our impact on the Big Island’s resources and operating costs.

Intelligent luxury is further championed through sustainable landscapes, protection of archaeological sites, natural resource preservation, eco-sensitive building practices, and educational programs that honor the island culture.

This commitment was cemented in 2007, when lineal descendants of the families who once lived at Kohanaiki, along with Kohanaiki’s management, came together for a ceremony which demonstrated the commitment of the lineal descendants and the Kohanaiki team to restore and preserve the historic and cultural sites at Kohanaiki and to perpetuate the culture by incorporating these sites into the community. from Kohanaiki

My husband also enjoyed playing the golf course. You might not think that it is possible to marry sustainable practices with golf and luxury homes for billionaires but Kohanaiki is doing just that! It’s a trend in the right direction!
