Excerpt from Raine Down by CB Samet

Raine had taken a few minutes to freshen up in her hotel room before their meeting. She was enjoying the detective part of partnering with Will, but, accustomed to working alone, she’d needed down time to recharge.

As she approached his table, she noted the USB was beside but not inserted into the laptop. He’d waited for her to unveil the clue, and the gesture felt as thoughtful as if he’d cooked a meal for her. Nonsense. Waiting to unveil clues together was probably something one colleague did for another—not an action based on mutual attraction.

Was it mutual?

Sometimes she thought so—in a glance or inadvertent brush of skin. They were playing a kind of dance with friendly jokes and polite respect for personal boundaries, getting to know each other little by little. The only way to be certain if attraction existed would be to make a move.

Not going to happen.

She would in no way, shape, or form jeopardize their working relationship.

With a cheerful smile, she sat beside him where she could see the monitor. “Shall we see what’s on the flash drive?”

Will slid the glass of beer in front of her. “First, we toast.” He raised his beer. “To our first successful interview.”

She grabbed her glass. “Success as defined by…?”

“We gathered information, and you didn’t shoot anyone.”

Meet The Author

Christina is a four-time award winning author in thriller, romantic suspense, and fantasy.

She is a mother of two energetic boys and a Jack Russel Terrier, a lover of suspense, adventure, and happy endings. She completed The Avant Champion epic fantasy series at over 450,000 words, and is releasing a new urban fantasy trilogy–The Shadow Guardians. The Rider Files books 1-7 are complete, and she’s plotting and writing books 8 and 9. She writes action and adventure in fantasy and romantic​ suspense genres with strong female leads.

Q: Describe your book in one sentence or fewer than 25 words.

CBS: Ragnarok happened. Survivors converged on earth many millennia ago, breeding and blending with humans. Now, a secret battle of bloodlines is being waged in the shadows of the real world.

Q: Why should we read your book?

CBS: Lovers of urban fantasy will enjoy a strong female lead, a world of magic and mysticism, and a foe unlike any other. The series makes for a fun read and enchanting escape from the struggles of every day life. The books are filled with action, adventure, magic, mystery, and battles, and romance… and all of this woven with Norse mythology.

Q: What do you hope people will get out of your book?

CBS: First and foremost, I hope people get enjoyment—an escape to a fantasy world of magic and mayhem. Next, I hope that readers will relate to the characters’ struggles. While we may not have magic and the world isn’t on the brink of destruction, we all face intermittent overwhelming challenges. We may react to these challenges as the characters in my fantasy series do—fear, insecurity, anger, and self-doubt—before we transform those feelings into productive engery to face the task at hand. Each of us has the ability to find our inner champion.

Q: What are you currently working on?

CBS: Since this is book one in The Shadow Guardians Trilogy. I’ve finished book 2 (Storm Surge) which is currently in round number 5,382 of edits. I’m halfway done with book 3 (Sky Fall).

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

CBS: My superpower of choice would be psychokinesis—the ability to move objects with my mind. After all, it’s a rather Jedi trait to have (more than just moving rocks, though).

As a writer, I envision churning more books out if I could jog and write at the same time… while walking the dog! Imagine how easy I could fix my next cup of inspirational coffee without disrupting the writing process. As a mother of two boys, I could be reining hide-and-seek champion forever (insert diabolic laugh here); I picture myself levitating to a closet ceiling, undetected. And, with the ability to manipulate objects, I could finally beat my husband in tennis!

Of course, I would also use my powers toward achieving world peace.
