Excerpt from Beyond Salvation by Barbara Nolan

“Get up.” The growly voice echoed against the bars of the Clark County holding cell, but Mamba’s brain refused to react. He’d slipped into a quasi-sleep fueled by tequila shots and a hot brunette whose name he couldn’t remember. Mary, Maddy—maybe he never knew it. Either way, it didn’t matter because, in his dream, this dark-haired beauty was swaying her hips in a body-skimming red dress that left nothing to the imagination.

“Dance with me.” She tried to pull him onto the floor.

“I don’t dance.” Mamba smiled down at her, wrapping his hands around her waist, his rough palms dragging over the silky material of her dress.

“Please?” Her huge ebony eyes pleaded as she ground against him. When she arched her back, her nipples almost popped over the top of the low-cut dress. Mamba dipped his head and sucked the delicate skin of her neck between his lips, then traveled lower to the crest of her cleavage. Her whispery moan jacked up his pulse and sent a shivering sensation straight to his balls.

They never made it to the dance floor, but his dick pounded with the need to sink into her perfect body. Mamba had to make her his right the fuck now, or he’d bust.

“C’mon, move it.” The rough voice jolted him out of his hardcore fantasy.

Mamba glared at the guard standing on the other side of the metal bars, then extended his arms over his head, careful not to teeter off the narrow bench.

“Let’s go.” The guard anchored his hands on his hips.

He guessed the young punk was going for intimidation, but the big fuckin’ joke was on him. Mamba had been fighting since he could walk, and honed his skills in underground free-for-alls in some of the shittiest holes in Vegas. So, no, a rookie barely able to shave didn’t even deserve eye contact.

“Put your hands through the bars,” the guard ordered, handcuffs dangling from his finger.

Mamba stretched again, slowly unfolded his bulk, and ambled across the cement floor. “Yeah, yeah.” It seemed like a lot of drama for a drunk and disorderly.

“Your lawyer’s on the way up.” The guard threw him another sneer.

Lawyer? Why the hell would Cobra call Grayson Hart? Usually, after a call to the Serpents’ contacts in Metro, he was out a few hours later.

Barbara is a native of New Jersey and New York. She loves her flawed, emotional, passionate alpha males and the women who tame them. Interview with Barbara Nolan

Q: Hi, Barbara. Tell us about your publishing journey. Did you always want to be an author?

BN: I have been writing stories since I was a teen, and have always been an avid reader. My writing started as a hobby, but when I decided to delve into it more seriously I went back to school. Studying my craft gave me the confidence to publish my first Book. I’ve been so blessed with the people I have met along the way and my only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner.

Q: What drew you to your book’s genre? Why that story?

BN: My genre is romantic suspense with a sub-genre of MC/Mafia romance. I love this genre because I can write about flawed characters in a romantic setting, and the contradictions are always exciting. Everyone roots for the underdog, and my characters show that love can be found on all levels.

Q: Describe your main character in three words.

BN: Reckless, Determined, and Loyal

Q: Why did you choose your setting?

BN: I chose Las Vegas as the setting for my Serpents MC series because although I’ve never lived in Las Vegas I’ve had many family members reside there. I have visited the area extensively, and feel I know the city well enough to write about it accurately. This location also lends itself to many different settings. You have the glitz of the Strip, the mountains, the desert, and Lake Mead all within driving distance and this diversity leads to many interesting storylines.

Q: What is one thing you hope readers will take away from your book?

BN: Since I mentioned that my characters are flawed, I hope people will see that change is possible even when you’ve been knocked down. I’ve given each of my characters some personal obstacles to overcome from addiction to panic attacks and since my male characters are tough hard-edged men, it’s interesting to see them struggle with inner demons as many of us do. I like to write my female characters as strong women even if they are struggling with their own issues. They are never portrayed as doormats or weak.

Q: How many books have you published and which is your favorite?

BN: Beyond Salvation is my twelfth book. I cannot believe that I’ve written that many books in only three years and I am very proud of each of them. I like to give my readers the best quality book that I can produce, but asking about a favorite would be like picking out a favorite child. It’s not possible, because each of my books holds a special and unique spot in my heart.

Q: What is your favorite part of being a published author?

BN: My favorite part of being an author is going to signings and meeting my readers. I love their enthusiasm and how they love my characters as much as I do. I also love connecting with other authors finding out their experiences and mainly talking about writing, my favorite subject. I’ve met so many wonderful people in this industry and look forward to meeting many more in the future.
