Book Review – The Nose by Nikolai Gogol

Book Review – The Nose By Nikolai Gogol

An absolutely absurd Story but in a good way. It’s a classic piece of writing. No explanation is provided as to how The Nose ended up in the bread of barber Ivan Yakovlevich one morning and how the same nose disappeared from the face of Collegiate Assessor Kovalyov earlier that day.

Ivan believes he must have cut off the nose when drunk and tries to get rid of it, but is thwarted at every turn until he drops The Nose into the Neva. However, Kovalyov later sees The Nose attending mass in full dress uniform at Our Lady of Kazan cathedral. He attempts to engage The Nose in conversation, but it escapes while Kovalyov is distracted…and that’s all I’m revealing. You should read this story yourself as it’s rather imaginative and a great illustration of the manners of the time.
