Book Review:

According to the Merriam Webster website, the word freelance is a verb that refers to pursuing a career without making a long-term commitment to one employer. Usually, people who freelance are self-employed; they decide who they’ll work for and for how long. You could call them corporate mercenaries, working for the highest bidder—and if you did so, you wouldn’t be too far from the word’s original meaning.

A gig economy is a free market system in which temporary positions are common and organizations hire independent workers for short-term commitments. The term “gig” is a slang word for a job that lasts a specified time; it is typically used by musicians. Examples of gig employees in the workforce could include freelancers, independent contractors, project-based workers, and temporary or part-time hires.

The gig workers include temporary workers, independent contractors, online platform workers, contract firm workers, and on-call workers. However, the good part is that an estimated 56% of new employment is generated by the gig world. Delivery boys, cleaners, consultants, bloggers, etc., are part of the gig economy. Uber, Ola, Zomato, etc., are all part of this labor platform. As the work is job-specific, workers have the flexibility to work for more than one contractor and choose the hours of work. This has encouraged women in labor force participation.

The first chapter of the book The Freelance Way by Robert Vlach, titled Business, explains the freelance market, economy, and its rise of it. The second chapter focuses on the life of a freelancer and the professional elements attached to it. There are misconceptions about a freelancer ob and working styles.

This chapter explains the in and out of the freelancer’s professional life. The third chapter focuses mainly on how to run the business, the importance of teaming up, negotiations with clients, pricing, usage of social media, blogs and websites, and self-promotion techniques. With easy and accessible language, real-time examples, facts, charts, and figures, author Robert Vlach’s book – The Freelance Way is an amazing book with a detailed view of Freelancing and situations that freelancers are faced with.

The immense research behind each and every sentence naming resources and real examples is interesting. The book is recommended to all those who wish to choose their career as freelancers!
