Newspaper headline read, "Soldiers made the nation proud." The children were busy talking. A Lady walked into the class and asked the children to maintain silence. She was a science teacher. She started, "our real heroes are our soldiers who....." Children probably did not understand much. A little girl asked, "why do humans fight?" The bell rang. The girl was attracted towards military service from a very young age as she had heard the military adventures of her nation throughout her childhood. Now a young woman, she decided to join the armed forces. On the day of recruitment, as she waited for her turn, she remembered how a newspaper headline had described a soldier's venture into the opposite army's territory where he lost his life. The headline read, "Valiant soldier's life ends." She used to imagine getting a hero's welcome after returning from a war. First day of the training, she was up early as she had no sleep, excited for the day to begin. When they assembled, the trainer was waiting for the recruits. The trainer said, "you are the chosen ones who will protect our country." The recruits held their heads high in pride. The trainer continued, "country is more important than your lives, whatever the circumstances, you will fight till your death." The recruits gave a roar of approval. The lady was proud believing she had the honour to protect the glory of her nation. The recruits were trained, disciplined and were thought what is right and wrong. The training ended. The recruits were elated, as the day of their dreams had arrived, the day they would be commissioned. It was like a festival, all the recruits' family were in attendance. The disciplined march of these young recruits was reminiscent of ants in a line following each other, but these recruits were marching with weapons. After their ranks were conferred. The young men and women sang glories of their nation. Another batch of fit men and women were ready to protect the country. The lady with her fellow soldiers traveled on a plane to their designated combat zone. In the plane, all the soldiers were enjoying except for a man who seemed to be in a conundrum. The lady saw the man, she recognized him immediately. She had met him in their training days. It was the initial days of training, he used to be a happy man enjoying the training. His swiftness would surprise the lady during training sessions. One day, during dinner they were on the same table. She asked, "do you enjoy training?" He replied, “I enjoy farming more." She asked, "how is life in the countryside?" He unassumingly replied, "life was going on….." They had finished their dinner. In the ensuing months he would be a pale shadow of his initial days. The lady, one day, told him, "you look insipid these days." The man said, "it is inconceivable to kill humans to solve problems, we are taught to kill humans more perfectly everyday." She replied, "we are taught not to kill but to protect our country." The man was speechless as he looked at her appalled at how she understood the murdering of humans. The man had grown up in the countryside listening to the stories of how the representatives of the unelected government had come to the villages and promised a better, peaceful and civilized society. The story goes, that these representatives of the unelected government had come to the countryside and had declared that this region comes under their control. The villagers would disagree and wanted to have a dialogue. The two parties would not come to an agreement. The to-be government withheld basic necessities to the villages like water and electricity. Basically, the villagers had to obey the to-be government. The popular saying in the village was, "the irony is, they punish disagreement and call themselves civilized." The plane landed, the soldiers walked out, they all looked the same but for this man. He was lost in his world. He had decided to go back home. The captain had called a meeting. The man entered the captain's tent and declared, "I want to quit this job." All the eyes in the tent were glaring him. The captain asked, "are you serious?" The man's reply was in affirmation. The captain said, "I will have to consult senior officials." The man was watching the sky. The lady walked to him and sat beside him. She asked, "what has happened?" He said, "if I continue in this job, it will be an unbearable lifelong regret." She asked, "why did you join the armed forces?" He replied, "I do not know, I was probably attracted to the way they described the job." They were gazing the sky for long. He asked, "how can we kill someone we have neither quarreled with nor met?..... who gave us the right to kill?..... and why should we kill?..... is this not the first question we should ask ourselves.” The lady was in quandary. The night had her thinking about every situation that made her choose armed forces as a career. As the gentle rays of the sun touched her, she dismissed her thoughts to be immature. But she was still confused. The man arrived, he thought, for the last time, at the captain's tent. The captain asked, "are you sure? You are forfeiting the honour to protect the country.” He reaffirmed, "indeed I want to leave." The captain handed him a letter which legally freed him from the service. As he stepped out, he saw the lady, she wished him a happy life of his choice. She saw a relieved man. She was happy that he choose what he thought to be right. The man's words haunted her. Questions like, "who gave us the right to kill?" would rerun in her mind. Her perceived truths were changing. Everyday she would revise her beliefs in her thought world. Newspaper headline read, "Tensions have escalated, war seems imminent." The young men and women were ordered to get ready. The soldiers headed to the combat zone in a plane. The lady isolated herself in the plane and started to ratiocinate, "why am I here?..... why did I choose to fight?..... how can we kill someone we have never seen?..... why should anybody die?..... who benefits from war?..... should I quit?..... I should go home..... As the plane landed, her thoughts came to a sudden halt as the noise jarred on her. Her forehead was warm and eyes were strained. After an hour of sleep, she walked around, all the while ratiocinating and decided that she would quit the job. At dawn, she thought hard for one last time, “my final decision?..... I will quit ….. because nobody has the right to kill..... am I wrong….. certainly not.” She took the freshly written resignation letter to the captain and announced her decision. The captain was startled. He asked, "what has happened to you? On the eve of the war you are quitting like a coward.” She declared, "war is an immoral act, I just realised." He said, "this may amount to treason." She walked away. The captain consulted his higher officers who were all in agreement that this amounted to treason as her decision was on the eve of the war. The captain with two officers stood in front of the lady holding an arrest warrant. The captain said, "you have been charged with treason. The case will be initially heard in a military court. Your rights..... and lastly the right to access a lawyer." The lady decided to represent herself in the courts. The military court proceedings began The prosecutor started, "the charges on her is treason. The lady has quit the armed forces on the eve of war and declared that war is immoral. According to sub section (a) of section 20 of Soldiers Act, "any act by a soldier or a group of soldiers that breaks the rules of this act as considered by a committee of senior officials as defined in this act." While quitting would be an ordinary event, but quitting on the eve of the war, the moment they had been trained for, with no valid reason. And by declaring war to be immoral amounts to treason. The lady's defense may start, announced the court. She started, "I certainly know for a fact that war is immoral to me. War was a trigger to my long ratiocination of rights and wrongs. I came to the conclusion that war is a crime, no one has a right to kill including the government. I have exercised my freedom of choice." The court in it's opinion, "treason, an act of betrayal, comes in the purview of the Supreme Court." The case was moved to the Supreme Court. The proceedings began. The prosecutor submitted, "the lady by declaring that ‘war is immoral’ at a sensitive time has acted against the interests of the country. The question arises whom is her allegiance to?" The lady in her defense, "my allegiance is to none but to myself. Is violence ever justified, my answer is no. But violence is justified when authorized by the government, the all powerful institution. The governments across the world justify violence if justification is in their interest. Violence is a crime and every government would be found guilty of this crime if ever they are brought to trial.” The prosecutor," this is a scathing attack on the world's governments and institutions. Her ideas are treasonous." The lady, "my justifications for the acts I have committed is submitted." The court's ruling, "The act of quitting armed forces in itself, her profession, would not have been amounted to treason. The court has reviewed the proceedings of the military court and in the court's view her convictions of the world are radical according to our times. She has also declared to have no allegiance to the country which contradicts her duties as a citizen as described in the constitution. In the court's view imprisoning her would achieve no objective of justice. Imprisonment might make her views more radical. The court orders her to be exiled from this country.
