A year went almost wrong in every way, no need to explain that. But undoubtedly the movies keep us alive in these unbelievably hard times. A pandemic could not stop this most beautiful form of art. So without any waste of time let's check the finest of Indian movies of this remarkable year. Count how many you have watched and how many you have to!
20. Serious Men
Based on Manu Joseph's novel, this Nawazuddin Siddiqui driven satire is an engaging social drama. A decent one time watch!
19. Bahut Hua Sammaan
18. Raat Akeli Hai
Another Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer got its place at top 20. Raat Akeli Hai is a slow burning murder mystery with so much quality. Dark and complex enough. Good one!
Little late to be called contemporary, but this Kashyap directorial is still enjoyable & a decent picture of those demonitization days.
16. Halal Love Story
Zakariya back with a feel good, refreshing, family entertainer which has its heart at right place.
15. Dracula Sir
A brave experimental attempt in Bengali film industry with strong performance, great cinematography and music. Appreciatable!
14. Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior
A proper mix of mass and class, Tanhaji is a stunning work what we don't get daily. Clear winner!
Another good enough film in this neo-horror era. It has logic, it has a social comment and it has one of the most beautiful cinematography. Gorgeous!
12. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl
An apt biopic, which is both attractive and inspiring. It didn't repeat many mistakes of ordinary Indian biopics.
Rajat Kapoor made a comeback in direction after the masterpiece Ankhon Dekhi. Kadakh is a fine black comedy with an thoroughly enjoyable screenplay and superb casting. Unfortunately it gone unnoticed!
Ready for the top 10?
10. C U Soon
Human will never accept defeat so easily, C U Soon is the evidence. A film of completely new format but it never fogot to thrill and entertain the viewers. It also proved why Malayalam Film Industry is leading Indian cinema. Must watch!
9. Anjaam Pathiraa
A stylish murder mystery with multiple layering. This Malayalam feature is easily one of the better Indian thriller.
A realistic work of art featuring the life of a easily forgettable side actor. Kaamyaab is one of it's kind. It's melancholic, it's sad, at the same time inspiring, uplifting. Sanjay Mishra delivered probably one of the finest performance by any actor in 2020. Such a legend he is!
7. Gulabo Sitabo
Sircar's latest directorial is subtle work of art about greed, dominance, dimension of longing and wheel of karma. Amitabh Bachchan's remarkable performance will remain one of the brightest memories of the lockdown. Signature!
For me, Anubhav Sinha's work can change a human mind. A film on this topic of domestic violance was must needed. I am happy it came from Sinha!
Ready for the top 5?
5. Chaman Bahaar
This 'easy not to notice' film is a pure surprise of 2020. A social satire which shows hard things in easy context. A brilliant screen presence of Jitendra Kumar, wonderful music and direction made this one of the finest movies of the year.
If anyone says perfect black comedy doesn't exist in bollywood, show them this. Lootcase is one of the most rare films. It offers you a general laughter hiding the bloodyness of the plot. A glorious star cast and a fantastic screenplay, Lootcase is and will remain as one of the finest black comedies of India!
3. Soorarai Pottru
Inspiring, motivational, soulful - this Sudha Kongara directorial is as good as a movie can be! It's probably the most complete film I have seen in a while. Surya rode it high. Masterpiece!
Anurag Basu, a man of promise, suppressed his own masterworks by this gem of a movie. Ludo is a sensational black comedy which is smart, apt, stylish, emotional, deep yet funny. It's hard to say anything about this himalayan work. Acting, direction, editing, mood, colour, camera everything was just perfect. No doubt, the best bollywood film of 2020 & offcourse one of the finest of the decade.
And the Indian film of the year is.....
Monumental, magnum opus, mesmerizing! No word can do justice with this Anwar Rasheed directorial. A dreamy, psychedelic experience. A deep yet tricky comment on religion, belives and society. This movie can control your mind, your thought process! You will be lost in its appeal, in its visual, in its back ground score. Seductive and sensational. Fahadh Faasil gave his career best performance and showed that he is the finest actor of India, right now. Trance is so much more than a film. Only way to feel it is to watch it, if you haven't yet. Hallelujah! Masterstroke!
