Thought of the Day: Big productions have a place in culture, admittedly. I mean, Kye and I absolutely love, for example, Stranger Things and Cobra Kai. We also have no small number of feature films, some serious blockbusters. The same is true for music; the same is true for literature.
But Kye and I recognize that this "attention economy" is viciously cruel and unfair, especially to those creators who remain "small" and obscure. You'd think that the Internet would have done the opposite; but in fact, all it has done is push the power curves closer to the vertical axis, so to speak. Getting noticed has become almost impossible.
Some of that--certainly not all of it--can be blamed on the (relatively) open nature of the Web. But most of the blame falls squarely on the anti-democratic actions of the giant platforms that hog up most of the Internet: Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter. Their Search algorithms prop up those who already have been propped up higher than Everest, and crush under heel those fighting for any kind of light at all. If you want to be noticed, you need--literally--at least seven figures and hundreds of the right connections, along with an enormous, oh-my-God-I-won-the-lottery dollop of sheer luck.
Since this is true, I consciously work at finding and linking to new talent. Here are a few for you to get to know. If you like their work, don't just thumbs-up it or whatever, share it!
- Matthew Cooke. This guy provides some of the best political commentary I've ever watched. He's eloquent, intelligent, and powerfully persuasive.
- Corey Ryan Forrester. Forrester is a comedian who delves into politics regularly. But whatever subject he talks about, it's a guarantee you're going to laugh.
- Ecosia. Seriously: drop Google search. Drop it now. Ecosia is a non-profit organization that plants a tree with every single search you do. It's what search should be; not like Google, which tracks you everywhere, sells your data to third parties, and arbitrarily changes their search algorithms, wiping out whole businesses overnight.
- Our Changing Climate. One of the very best climate channels out there. Always informative and eye-opening.
- The Halluci Nation. A Canadian electronic music group that incorporates First Nation elements in their music. Compelling and inspiring.
