My Rating: ⭐⭐1/2 (2.5/5 Stars)
One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.
I was hoping to like this book more than I did. I love horror stories and the synopsis of this book sounded like something I'd really enjoy, however, I did not find the story to be that scary. This book had gore, plenty of gore, but it didn't chill me to the bone, and I like horror stories to scare the crap out of me. Maybe I've just read too many horror stories or seen too many horror movies, that I've become desensitized to horror books, but this story lacked that "I'm super frightened, can't read this alone at night" scare level for me. Also, I found the characters to be rather annoying and the plot didn't seem overly original to me. A group of teens is hunted one by one by a crazed psychopath, there's blood, there's gore, there's teens from different cliques at school who are being hunted; it all felt a little too much like the movie "Scream" or "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Been there, watched that.
This is the first book that I've read by Stephanie Perkins and I did find it to be a quick read, which I liked. I can't stand when books take me forever to get through and I end up finishing them months later. The author is known for her romantic contemporaries, like "Anna and the French Kiss", and this is her first horror novel, so I'm curious to see how I will like her other books. I have a feeling that I will enjoy her romantic contemporaries much more than this horror story.
If you're looking for a quick read that isn't that scary but has plenty of gore, then maybe give this book a try, but you might want to pass on this one if you're looking for a really frightening read.
