Environment - “Justin Trudeau refused to be drawn on whether he backed Theresa May’s proposal to ban plastic straws as he called for a global effort to clean the world’s oceans.
The Canadian Prime Minister, in London for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, said he believed in “evidence-based” policy and looked forward to discussing Mrs. May’s plan at the G7 summit in June.
Mrs May has set out plans to ban plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds from sale in England, as she vowed to tackle “one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world.”
The Prime Minister urged Commonwealth leaders gathered in the capital to follow the UK’s example in tackling the problem.
“There is only a mild overlap between members of the Commonwealth and the G7 so I will know there will be a lot of interest in Prime Minister May’s proposal and I look forward to that discussion at that time,” Mr Trudeau said.
When pressed he added: “We believe in moving forward on evidence-based policy, we know that macro-plastics like straws are a significant challenge in the ocean but we also know that both micro-plastics and nano-plastics represent a real challenge to our oceans.” By Scott D’Arcy 20 April 2018 The “i” Newspaper
