I absolutely loved My Temporary Life by Martin Crosbie — the second half of it. In all honesty, the first half was a little hard to get into. But please do persevere because by the time Malcolm and Heather go camping this is game-on, can’t-put-down suspense that leaves you breathlessly transformed as a person.
In truth, this is an incredible novel because the author ambitiously rolls several genre into one: romantic suspense, contemporary romance, coming-of-age, mystery thriller… but because of that it is almost so unique it’s confusing. The first half is really mainly coming-of-age and literary fiction, and I do wish that Mr. Crosbie had reduced the post-set-up ‘Hero Reacting Phase’ when Malcolm “chooses the safe route, watching the world from a distance” as it says up there in the blurb. That’s the bit that didn’t quite work for me. It’s important to really live Malcolm’s world, but on the other hand, I wanted it to move faster there.
You may notice in the Amazon sales description blurb above that this novel is a top-10 overall Amazon bestseller — this is a truly incredible thing because Martin Crosbie is an indie author who has sold complicated novels that cross genres and he’s doing fantastically well. Seriously well. That is such heartening news for indie authors and any authors, really.
I discovered him browsing something one day and when I saw his book called How I Sold 30,000 eBooks on Amazon Kindle, I bought that, read it and thought, ‘Blimey!!! I am inspired!’ It was incredibly interesting to read how this guy markets his work.
Martin Crosbie is a mega talented author. His prose sings. It has heart and soul. And I also love his emailed newsletters — he’s just very genuine and sincere. He’s a great author to discover and enjoy. My Temporary Life is a literary rollercoaster that leaves you breathless. Treat yourself for these holidays. Why not? You deserve it!
