Seagate Expansion Hard Drive 1 TB Review

Seagate is a trusted brand which manufactures some startling portable hard drives. Today we have in for review ‘The Seagate Expansion 1TB External Hard Drive’. This is a very famous product in the market and I wanted to find out why people are liking this product. So here in this post I have done a complete review on this Seagate’s expansion hard drive.

In the box I got the Expansion hard drive itself, a cable having a HDD plug port on one end and a USB 3.0 port on the other, a quick guide manual and warranty card.

The Seagate Expansion has a very clean and simple design. It measures 4.8 inches by 3.2 inches by 0.6 inch (12.2 by 8.1 by 1.52cm) in dimension and easily fits in the hand. It is small and compact and you can slide it in your pocket and carry it where you want. The Expansion is a low power SATA hard drive which spins at 5400 rpm. Out of the box, the drive is preformatted into NTFS, that means it will work well on the windows operating system and can be formatted easily into HFS+ format to make it work on MAC operating system.

I am completely impressed by the design of this drive which looks very neat and professional. The drive is only available in black color. The body built is of good quality plastic which seems durable. The front side of the drive is textured matte finished and is scratch proof.  The back is also matte finished without the textured feel and is prone to scratches. On the front top left side is the Seagate logo and the SS port is present on the bottom of the drive. On the back side, the detail information about the product such as the model number, certificates etc. is written. Overall the Seagate Expansion has a very simple and appealing design.

No Backup and Protection Software

The Seagate Expansion does not come with the backup and protection software pre-installed in it. The drive focusses only on providing an extra storage for the users. It do come with a product registration software which didn’t work in my case. The only error its showing is that you do not have an internet connection although my internet is working very fine.

So no backup and protection software, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot store your important and sensitive files in it. You can download a third-party backup and encryption software to protect your valuable data.

I bought this drive to store my media and software files in it. I knew it was a low power drive and will perform a little slow while transferring data into it but was surprised to see that it performs exceptionally well.

The Expansion drive is both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatible but less transfer speed when using it with USB 2.0.   I tested the speed of this hard drive using the Crystal DiskMark software. For USB 3.0 port, drive registered a copy speed of 106.5 MB/s read and 106.7 MB/s write. The speed is very good despite the fact that the extension hard drive has no RAID-0 feature for boosting the speed. The transfer speed for transferring the 4K videos registered as 0.422 MB/s read and 0.851 write.

When tested for USB 2.0 port, the drive registered a transfer speed of 31.75 MB/s read and 27.58 MB/s write which is better than the normal USB 2.0 standard.

To cross check the transfer speed I tested the drive with other software called as the Arvil’s Storage Utilities. The test results are shown in the image below.

Overall, as far as performance is concerned, the Seagate Expansion is about as good as it gets for a drive of its type.

My experience with portable hard drive have been good so far. I haven’t got any problems with the drive and I’ll recommend this hard drive to anyone who wants to add storage to their computers and laptops. However, if your primary concern is protecting your data against cases of loss and theft, this isn’t the drive for you.

If fast performance, lots of storage space and a low-cost are everything you’re looking for in a storage device, go ahead and get the Seagate Expansion. It’s a great drive, no matter if you’re a Mac or Windows user.
