A power surge, spike or a power failure may damage your electrical equipment or may cause them to behave abnormally. If you are working on a computer, then such undesired power surges may damage your computer and you may also lose your unsaved data. This is exactly why you need a UPS which stabilize the power before reaching the equipment and also will provide power backup when there is no electricity.
An Uninterruptible Power Supply aka UPS is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails. An UPS will not provide you with hours and hours of power backup, instead you will get only 5 to 10 minutes (possibly more) of power backup. This is enough to save the work you are doing on your computer and also shut it down properly.
So what should you look for in an UPS? Below I have mentioned some of the things you should keep in mind while buying a UPS.
How many components do you want to be protected by the UPS? Accordingly decide the number of plugs for your UPS. Normally a standard UPS will provide you with a minimum of 3 to 4 output plugs. Before buying do check the description of the UPS online for how many plugs are battery backed up. Generally, there will be 3 plugs out of the 4 which will be both battery backed up and surge protected and the remaining one plug will only be surge protected. So if you want more than 3 devices to be battery backed up then you’ll need an UPS with more plugs. Always buy one with 2 extra plugs than you need for future flexibility.
What are your power requirements? How much power do all your component which you need to be surge protected and battery backed consumes? First calculate this. You can calculate this by simply using a wattmeter. If your device is consuming more power than your UPS can generate, they’ll go dead even if the battery has plenty of charge. You don’t want this to happen. So choose a UPS which has higher rating than your total device power consumption. Confused? Don’t know what power rating is and how to calculate it? Relax! Well while selecting an UPS you need to look at the VA rating that is voltage multiplied by amps. The amps rating of your devices such as computers are provided in the manual. Calculate and add up the VA rating, then select an UPS with VA rating 20- 25% higher.
Most UPS provide you with a power backup of up to 10 to 20 minutes or even less. So don’t expect a UPS to keep your device running for hours. Basically it will allow to save your ongoing work and then properly shutdown your computer and thus protect the computer from abrupt shutdown which may alter your computer settings. Choose an UPS which will satisfy your backup needs. The backup time is directly proportional to the cost, As the backup time increases the cost also will increase.
UPS has a big job to do and is not expected to break down or fail. A UPS promises to protect your device worth thousands, or even ten thousand or million. When a component performs such an important task then you need to have some assurity. This is provided by the manufacturer by providing an equipment protection warranty.
Mostly UPS comes with both “product warranty” (which covers defects in the UPS itself) and a “connected equipment” warranty, which promises to reimburse the value of any devices destroyed by failure of the UPS. Do read the terms and conditions set by the manufacturer before buying a UPS or else you may regret it later. Also check the reimburse amount that the manufacture is willing to pay you back. If you are connecting a computer worth 60k or 70K and your UPS warranty covers reimbursement up to only 20k to 30k then you’ll be in a loss.
