Homosexuality and Christianity part 1

I have recently started deeply into Homosexuality and Christianity. Before I say anything else I want to share why I'm sharing with you that I'm doing this study. I've seen many other blog posts by other Christians on their Bible studies and I've seen that it's very fruitful as other Christians will not only keep them in prayer for their study but will also study the subject themselves and walk with them in their study. As the Bible says "as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another" Proverbs 27:17 NIV. It's helpful and good when we as Christians come together and study deeply into the Bible and what it says. It's also a lot of fun. I always get such enjoyment trying to figure out the context and what's going on and what's said and why it's said and everything else that goes into a Bible study. So, I'm sharing my study with you all in the hopes that Christians will come together and pray and study deeply on this subject. That's all my intent is. I have no intent at all to lead anyone astray all I ask is that we come together and pray and study the subject of homosexuality and Christianity deeply....

Now I have asked for prayer for my studies through this and I've been prayed for and I pray myself continuously as I delve deep into this.  When I asked for prayer the basic reaction I got wasn't "I'll keep your studies in prayer" although one or two said that but overall the response I got was "it's a sin just read your Bible." When asking for prayer I didn't claim that homosexuality was a sin or not all I asked was for prayer on the subject. That's what I ask for now is for simply to pray on this and to delve deeply into this subject yourself. I will now pray before continuing further and I ask that you please join me in prayer...

Dear Father in Heaven I thank You that I can come to You now in prayer and be heard by You and I thank You that You will answer. I recognize and acknowledge and accept that You don't always answer how I or anyone else wants but how You answer is always right and good. You are good You can't do anything but good. You can't sin nor tempt anyone to sin You can't even look at sin. I thank You for the sacrifice of Your Son who's blood cleanses my sins and washes them away into the sea of forgetfulness. I thank You for the Holy Spirit Who lives in me and Who gives me guidance, light, and leading on Your Word and who You are. Without the Holy Spirit, I acknowledge I would never know or understand anything about You or the Bible. I thank You for the Word You have given and that I have the freedom to read it. I thank You for not only giving me the help of the Holy Spirit but for the brain You have given me and the ability to reason and learn. I ask please for You Father to fill me and whoever reads this with Your Holy Spirit, Your wisdom, Your understanding, and Your discernment. Father GOD I ask that You lead every Christian whether they claim to be LGBTQP or not that You would lead them in prayer and in deep study on what You say about homosexuality and Christianity and that we will be as one as You are ONE and finally come to a conclusion once and for all if homosexuality is a sin or not and that we will all be in agreement. I ask that we all be open to what You say please Father open our minds, hearts, and souls to You and please help us to accept whatever You say, what You say is right and good. I thank You, Father, for listening and for Your answer to my prayer. In Jesus Name I pray amen.

I think it is good to study not only as I stated above does it bare fruit and it's fun but GOD loves it when we study. "Now the Barean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men" Acts 17:11-12 NIV.   Should we not be Barean's on this subject? After all, it was praiseworthy that the Barean's sought Scripture about Salvation shouldn't it be just as praiseworthy for us to see what Scripture says and study it with eagerness on the subject of homosexuality and Christianity? If we all do that will not the Father reward our efforts and help us to become one on this subject? So let's all be Barean's and study deeply into the subject of homosexuality and Christianity. Let's cover it thoroughly. I will now share my own studies on this and I will note that I'm nowhere near done yet. I do not claim to be right or wrong I'm not teaching I'm not preaching I want to make that very clear. I'm not a theologian nor a Pastor nor a teacher of any sort. I'm just simply sharing what I have found and my questions so far. So, here are my studies on homosexuality and Christianity and my questions so far....

I came to this subject with the thought that homosexuality is a sin and I had no doubts in my mind. However, I wanted more of  a reason to argue this than to just say "GOD says so." Now I'm not doubting GOD as the final authority if GOD says something is a sin then it's a sin period whether we like it or not. However, if GOD says something isn't a sin and we call it a sin we are deep trouble because GOD will judge us on that. Same if GOD says something is a sin and we say it isn't a sin again we are deep trouble and will be judged by GOD on that. So, if we claim something to be a sin then we had better be sure beyond all reasonable doubt that it is a sin...

I wanted to come at this more intellectually. I wanted to know what Scripture said about this inside and out and I still do like I said my studies are nowhere near done yet. So, I went to Scripture to see what Scripture had to say on the subject of homosexuality. After all, I know and believe that everything in the Bible is true there is no fiction in the Bible. Before I studied like I said I prayed just like I did on this blog. So, let's go to very beginning as when I argued the topic that homosexuality is a sin I would say "GOD created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." So let's see what Genesis says and see if Genesis back's me up on my claim. Genesis 1:26-27 "Then GOD said, "let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over ever creeping thing that creeps on earth" So GOD created man in His own image, in the image of GOD He created Him; male and female He created them" ESV. Then we also have in Genesis 2:18-25. I won't quote the whole thing you can read it for yourself but it talks about the creation of the woman. GOD had said it wasn't good for the man to be alone so He brought all the animals to Adam but no animal was a suitable partner or helper for Adam. After all remember Adam is created in the image of GOD and has dominion over the animals. The animals are not equal to Adam, animals are not created in the image of GOD as humans are. This is why we don't marry animals because not only is that disgusting but it's impossible for animal and human to have a loving committed monogamous Christian relationship with each other. Sure you may love your pet and you may even talk to your pet but you can't have the same relationship with a pet as you can with a human no matter how hard you try it's not possible it can't be done. So, for Adam an animal won't do so we need a human. So, GOD creates the first woman Eve. When Adam saw Eve he said "woo man!" Haha actually no he didn't say that. That's just some humor. What Adam really said was "This, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of a man." Genesis 2:23 ESV. Then the Bible follows up with saying "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" Genesis 2:24 ESV. Some valid questions have arisen from this such as "if GOD condones homosexuality why didn't He create a man and another man or a woman and another woman instead of a man and woman?" GOD surely could have created a man and another man or a woman and another woman if He wanted to but He didn't. Is this though reason enough to argue that homosexuality is a sin? So why didn't GOD create a man and another man or a woman or another woman? I don't claim to have the answer but I have a hypothesis that makes sense. Again I'm still studying this and I could be wrong or I could be right. My hypothesis is if let's say GOD created a man and another man and then the woman it would have made it look like women were less equal to a man. We woman already have had enough trouble with that and GOD knew about our fight for equal rights. By creating both man and woman the way He did GOD proves that both are equal in His sight and no gender is better than the other gender. If GOD created a woman and another woman it would have been the same problem for men, men would have been seen as lesser beings if it were done that way. So, now we rightfully see each gender as equal. What about that follow up verse though? It says a man will leave his parents and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh. So, is this saying a man shall stop loving his parents or abandon his parents or run away from home? No, it's not. When men and women marry they are saying their parents are no longer the authority figures in their lives they are not children they are adults. This doesn't mean that when someone is single that they are a child their whole life. After all, Paul remained single and we don't say that Paul was a child. However, if you are adult enough to be married you are adult enough not to need your parents to tell you what to do either. Does this mean you won't need your parents ever? No of course not. So. moving on we have that after leaving mother and father that a man must hold fast to his wife and they will become one flesh. Holding fast is like saying clinging, in fact, I believe some versions of the Bible do translate that as to a man must cling to his wife. This points to the command of do not commit adultery. When you marry you are to stay with your spouse for life that's what Jesus Himself pointed out. "Some Pharisees came to Him to test Him. They asked, "is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" "Haven't you read" He replied, "that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, for this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what GOD has joined together, let no one separate." Matthew 19:3-4 NIV. So, does this mean that women can divorce if they want to but not men? No, remember we are equals what is sinful for a man is sinful for a woman. GOD hates divorce and created marriage for us to remain together. Marriage is not a toy to be played with it is a sacred holy commitment and we should never rush into it. So, people get married they are to stay married until death they part that's really all that is saying. When married people are not supposed to go and date someone else that's adultery to even think it is adultery. The part about Adam and Eve becoming one flesh is talking about sex. Yup, GOD created sex. Sex is not dirty it's not evil it's not sinful. Sex is a gift from GOD and is to be used wisely. We are not to be promiscuous or prostitute ourselves we must remember again we are created in GOD's image and we are to reflect GOD and not only that but as Christian's we are Temple's of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. We can't treat Temple's or our bodies anyway we choose for we belong to GOD and we must honor GOD with our bodies. So, this is why as Christian's we don't prostitute ourselves or sleep with everyone we meet. Sex is to only happen between two people (and no more than 2) who are loving Christian's who are married to each other. We might not like that but that's the way GOD set that up. GOD does not condone sex before marriage ever. Back to the study... So, from what I can see from the above in my studies I see no proof or backing for my argument of GOD created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. I see nothing there nothing that condemns homosexual marriage. Now maybe I'm wrong and if I'm wrong I'll accept that but I'll need proof I'm wrong. I can't just say homosexuality is a sin because someone tells me to just trust them it just is or they feel it's wrong so it must be wrong. I can't and won't accept those arguments and I'm no longer going to bring up the Genesis account as an argument against homosexuality unless I get more proof.

On to the next Scripture I studied which is Sodom and Gomorrah. Many Christian's refer to this when speaking against homosexuality and say it was the sin of Sodom or Sodomy. So, I had a look at it and again I'm still studying this. The whole account of Sodom and Gomorrah can be found in chapters 18 and 19 of Genesis. The basic story is GOD rains fire and brimstone down on Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sin but was that sin homosexuality? Before the cities are destroyed we are told Abraham's nephew Lot has moved to Sodom with his family. We are told that two Angels and the Lord appear to Abraham who rightfully bows down in greeting and serves them. Not only is this right to do because it's Angels and the Lord but hospitality in Abraham's day was as important as obeying GOD's commands. Only those who were horrible people were inhospitable. Even now the Lord want's us to hospitable for we may be entertaining Angels unaware. While with Abraham the Lord tells Abraham that He intends to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Please note to yourself that before the Angels went to the cities the Lord had intended to destroy those cities. I think that needs to be noted. So, fast forwarding ahead the Lord had sent the Angels to find at 10 righteous and if 10 righteous people could be found the cities would not be punished and so the two Angels go to Sodom and Lot like his uncle offers his hospitality. At first, the Angels decline his offer but Lot insists and the Angels change their mind. So, the Angels stay with Lot and the Bible says this "before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom - both young and old - surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "where are the men who came with you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "no, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof." "Get out of our way," they replied. "This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door." Genesis 19:4-9 NIV. This is a horrible thing to have happened and I don't wish that sort of night to happen to anyone. These verses are what Christian's point to as Sodom and Gomorrah's sin and why their punishment was so severe. That doesn't make sense to me. First off no one in Gomorrah banged on Lot's door it was only the men from Sodom. Why should Gomorrah face wrath for something that happened in Sodom? That makes no sense to me.  That's like GOD pouring wrath on the USA because a gang in Canada raped a man/woman to death. Why would GOD punish the USA for something that happened in Canada? That would make no sense. When GOD pours out His wrath He has a reason to He never does that just for something to do. That's reason number one why I question homosexuality as the sin that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for. GOD destroying cities this way is not a normal occurrence. It's not like they say on the news "that's the weather and today two people were caught shoplifting, a man murdered someone, and GOD destroyed yet another city." That just doesn't happen. Sodom and Gomorrah both have had to commit the exact same crimes for them both to be punished. Also, another reason that I'm doubting homosexuality was the sin that destroyed them GOD had intended to destroy these cities before the Angels paid their visit and had a mob after them. As to what happened was awful. Lot had a mob outside his door wanting to basically gang rape the two Angels and also him and if he didn't co-operate. These men are not flirting or hitting on Lot or the Angels. It's a lot like what happens in prison. If you're a man sent to prison and the men say to the jailor "bring that man to us so that we can have sex with him" I highly doubt they would be flirting or hitting on that man. In fact, that man if he doesn't defend himself is about to get the worst punishment and it's not a sign of love. Men in prison do this not because of love but to basically say "I own you and you do what I say." This is establishing dominance it's to intimidate. When a man rapes a woman or a woman rapes a man that's not love is it? What happened in Sodom certainly wasn't loving at all. So, what was the sin that caused that Sodom and Gomorrah to be destroyed was it homosexuality or was it something else? So far I haven't seen evidence that the sin was homosexuality. "Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before Me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen." Ezekiel 16:49-50 NIV. I see nothing there about homosexuality, do you? If homosexuality was the sin that caused their destruction wouldn't the Word say that? Yes, it says they did detestable things before the Lord. He could be just saying that that being arrogant, overfed, unconcerned, not helping the poor and needy, and being haughty were detestable and there are other places in the Bible where GOD does call those specific things as sinful. So again if homosexuality was the sin that destroyed Sodom wouldn't the Word say that in this passage which it doesn't? Also, back to the happening of the rape. When a man rapes a woman or when a woman rapes a man does this make all heterosexuality a sin? No, then why does it mean that when it comes to homosexuality? It just doesn't make sense. That sounds more like a double standard to me. Maybe I'm wrong and if the Lord shows me I'm wrong I'll accept it. For right now though I'm going to stop using Sodom and Gomorrah as a good enough argument against homosexuality as it just doesn't add up to me as enough evidence to support homosexuality being a sin. So, on to the next verse, I studied...

"If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense" Leviticus 20:13 NLT. There is also "you shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination" Leviticus 18:22 ESV. Well, that seems very cut and dry doesn't it? You know, I have been reminded dozens of times by my brothers and sisters in Christ to look at the context of Bible verses. If I had a nickel for every time I was reminded of that I would be very wealthy right now. So, what is the context of these verses? Are they really saying homosexuality is a sin? Leviticus is an Old Testament book on the law. There are dozens of laws in it and how the Israelites memorized them all I don't know. If I were there after the whole thing I'd be like "okay so what was number one again?" Haha. Other things listed in this law were said to be abominations such as eating shellfish and mixing different clothing together. I eat shrimp I love shrimp does this mean I'm going to Hell? No, still let's go deeper into this because if GOD is saying homosexuality is a sin than I need to agree with Him. Most Christians today don't follow the laws of the Old Testament. We eat our shellfish and our bacon very happily. So why don't we as Christian's obey the law of the Old Testament? In the New Testament when the Gospel was being spread the Jews had gotten angry that the Gentiles were not obeying the law of circumcision and other Old Testament laws. The Jews were very sure they were in the right after all the Bible said these laws and if GOD said these laws then they should be obeyed without question. The Jews probably did quote the Old Testament law to the Gentiles telling them that they had to do these things now and if they didn't they would go to Hell. Were the Jews right to do this? No, as Paul said we are not under law but under grace. "For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace" Romans 6:14 NIV. Paul and other disciples taught the Jews about the grace we are now under and how we are no longer under the law anymore and also taught this to the Gentiles so that they wouldn't think they were going to Hell. Some Christians when it comes to Leviticus separate it into the Moral law and the Ceremonial Law. Where exactly in the Bible does GOD say the exact specific words "this is the Moral law which you have to keep always and this is the ceremonial law which you have to obey now but later on you won't" where is that because I didn't see that anywhere? When Paul said we are no longer under law but under grace did he say "we are no longer under moral law but under grace" or "we are no longer under ceremonial law but under grace" or "we are no longer under law but under grace"? Jesus came not to abolish but to fulfill the law did He fulfill all of it or not? If Jesus fulfilled the whole law and if we are no longer under law but under grace why do we still pick and choose which parts of the law to obey and which to not obey? Don't we when we go under the law, for one thing, are now under the whole law which we would now have to obey perfectly and we can't? Plus if the Lord really wanted us to use the Old Testament as proof that homosexuality is a sin why isn't "don't be a homosexual" one of the ten commandments? GOD could have made it one of the ten commandments but He didn't. One could also point out that rape is not in the commandments either. Well, Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love GOD with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Is rape really loving your neighbor? I don't think so. This just is not adding up to me as enough proof to say that homosexuality is a sin. I just don't see enough proof to back that up. If the Lord says I'm wrong I'll accept that but for now, I'm going to stop using these verses as proof that homosexuality is a sin.On to the next Bible verse I studied...

"The wrath of GOD is being revealed against all ungodliness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness since what may be known about GOD is plain to them, because GOD has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world GOD's invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew GOD, they neither glorified Him as GOD nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal GOD for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore, GOD gave them over their sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about GOD for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - Who is forever praised Amen. Because of this GOD gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error" Romans 1:18-26 NIV. Again it seems pretty straight forward. So, let's just say for a moment that homosexuals can also be Christians at the same time I know there's a lot of arguments on that but let's just say for a moment it's possible and there are people are both practicing homosexuals and Christians. I know it's hard but just go with me on this and let us think this through together. If a person can be a practicing homosexual and a Christian at the same time than this Scripture is definitely not condemning them at all. What's happening is in the first part GOD is basically all are without excuse no one can truthfully say there is no GOD. That's why in the Bible it says only the fool says in his heart there is no GOD. So the first part lays down the foundation that everyone has been given proof that GOD exists then it progresses to say a non-believer (I say non-believer because this passage says these people are godless. A Christian can't be godless because GOD lives in the.) So, a non-believer is given the Gospel or at least is given proof in creation there is a GOD and for whatever reason, this non-believer rejects the truth. Like Paul says they exchanged the truth for a lie. They think they know it all they make their own truth they may their own rules and start worshipping other things. We are created to worship GOD and when we don't we automatically worship other things. This doesn't mean you'll physically bow down to something else. Whatever you spend the most time with and the most time thinking about is what you are worshipping. So, this person this non-believer has rejected GOD is believing their own lies and is now worshipping something else and it gets worse. They are obviously non-repentant they don't care about the things of GOD or even trying. So GOD hands them over to their own desires if you don't want GOD in the picture He'll leave. They seek their own desires and are doing things just because someone said it's a rebellion and now they are doing it anyways just to rebel there is no other reason. In this state, they'll do all sorts of things such promiscuity and prostitution not only heterosexually but also homosexually as well. There is no love in this person's heart they are not seeking to please GOD or looking for a loving committed monogamous Christian relationship. This person is rebelling for the sake of it and their motto basically "let's eat and drink and be merry for tomorrow we die." There are those who are practicing homosexuality and also are practicing Christians. They go to Church, they read the Bible, they pray. they do devotionals, they get baptized, and they believe the Gospel. The only difference that I can see so far is that they are LGBTQP Christians and other Christians aren't. I see so far no other difference at all. If the Lord tells me I'm wrong I'll accept that but I see no evidence so far for that. On to the next Bible verse I studied...

The next one I studied was 1 Corinthians 6:9. This one gets a lot harder because different translations make this passage so different. With the KJV it says "know ye not the unrighteous shall not inherit the Kingdom of GOD? Be not deceived: Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the Kingdom of GOD." ESV translation says "Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." The NIV translates it this way "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." Last but not least the Message puts it this way "Don’t you realize that this is not the way to live? Unjust people who don’t care about God will not be joining in his kingdom. Those who use and abuse each other, use and abuse sex, use and abuse the earth and everything in it, don’t qualify as citizens in God’s kingdom. A number of you know from experience what I’m talking about, for not so long ago you were on that list. Since then, you’ve been cleaned up and given a fresh start by Jesus, our Master, our Messiah, and by our God present in us, the Spirit." The ESV and NIV are almost identical and translation. If we look at just the Message though this passage doesn't mention homosexuality at all. With the KJV it uses the word effeminate. Effeminate can mean a lot of different things to different people. Some say it's effeminate to cry or hug or wear a kilt because it looks like a skirt. Some say in order to be a real man you have to hunt and fish and spit on the sidewalks. In this day and age, it's really up to the man what to him is effeminate and what isn't. So, the only versions that I'm bringing up here (and there are dozens of them) that mention homosexuality specifically is the ESV and the NIV. Are these translations correct? Or is the Message correct because again this version doesn't say homosexuality at all? If the ESV and the NIV are correct are they condemning homosexuality saying it's a sin or this like the passage in the passage in Romans where it's basically stating that the non-believer won't be in GOD's Kingdom. The other things listed are sins that many other Christians have committed. We have all sinned all fall short of the glory of GOD no one is good not a one. There are other things I have found out about these verses which I will share with you in a bit. In the meantime let's go look the last Bible verse I studied...

1 Timothy 8-11 "We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me." NIV.  There is the law again. It says here the law isn't for the righteous this must mean for Christians who else can it mean? This is for the lawbreakers the non-believers. If a person can be a Christian and a homosexual than these verses also don't include them.

These are the only Bible verses that speak specifically about homosexuality. I have found other information studies on these verses which I have read. I would have included their work in the above but I didn't want to steal their work. So you can click on the links I give you and read them for yourself.
