Refugee Laws – The Need of the Hour?

As India sees an exodus of Refugees from its neighbours, there is an urgent need to look at establishing a law that governs refugees in the country.

With no established laws, the refugee crisis is something that needs urgent attention. India still handles illegal migrants under The Foreigners Act of 1946 in the absence of a specific refugee law.

Thousands of refugees are not even recognised which makes it hard for them to make ends meet. There is an inconsistent policy toward refugees based on the relationship with the country they are coming from or based on vote bank and domestic politics.

Refugees from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Pakistan Hindus are happening quite regularly but there is no uniform law that can be implemented as far as refugees are concerned.
