English actor Ben Cross, known for his role in “Chariots of Fire”, dies at the age of 72

Cross, who died in Vienna, Austria, had recently finished filming for the horror film “The Devil’s Light,” and this year he will be seen starring in the romantic drama “Last Letter From Your Lover.”

Born Harry Bernard Cross, in London, into a Catholic family, he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (Rada). After a few roles in the theater, he made his film debut in 1977, with a supporting role in “A Bridge Too Far,” starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

In the same year, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, before becoming known for the role of Billy Flynn in the 1978 version of the show “Chicago”.

He starred in “Chariots Of Fire” (1981), directed by Hugh Hudson, a four-time Oscar-winning feature film, including Best Picture.

Cross played the role of athlete Harold Abrahams in the film based on the true story of two British runners at the 1924 Olympic Games.

He also starred in “First Knight” (1995), “Nuremberg: Nazis on Trial” (2006), “Star Trek” (2009), and “Banshee” (2013), among others.
