Twitter locks out China’s US embassy after a “baby-making machines” tweet

Twitter locks out China’s US Embassy after a “baby-making machines” tweet. Twitter is said to have locked up the official account for the US embassy of China, over a tweet it said went against its policy against brutality, Bloomberg reports.

The tweet, which was formerly distributed on the 7th of January, points out to Uighur women as “baby-making machines” prior to the intervention of the government. Twitter withdrew the tweet and replaced it with a notice saying that it is not available anymore.

Although, Twitter wants owners of accounts to delete tweets manually that goes against its rules before having to unlock their accounts.

Twitter confirmed the account’s locking

Twitter also confirmed the account’s locking in an affirmation that was given to Bloomberg.

The Statement Twitter made reads thus:

“We have taken action on this Tweet for violating our policy against dehumanization,”. He also mentioned that the platform prohibits the dehumanization of a group of people. Based on their “religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity”.

As of the writing. The previous tweet on Twitter from the Chinese Embassy in the US account was from about 2 weeks ago on the 9th of January.

China has battled with wild condemnation of minority Uighur Muslims residing in the Xinjiang province. With critics claiming that it is violently sterilizing Uighur women. The United Nations has estimated that over a million Uighurs may be held down in camps in the region. This was according to reports from Bloomberg.

On the 19th of January, Mike Pompeo, the former US Secretary of State. Mentioned that China’s treatment of the Uighurs sums up to genocide.

At a meeting in Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman mentioned that the embassy was baffled by the look of the account on Twitter. And also mentioned that the embassy was trying to change false reports and information that is related to Xinjiang.

Chinese embassy distributed reports and infographics

In the tweets that can still be seen on its US page, the Chinese Embassy has distributed reports. As well as infographics that are related to population growth and its policies in Xinjiang. The embassy became part of the Twitter users in 2019, as part of a wider effort to counter criticism by China.

Twitter has been criticized before by Donald Trump, the former President of the United States of America. As well as his allies who said that the social network was unlawfully attacking the republicans. While enabling foreign governments to go against its policies.

In May 2020, in a response to the warning label that was put down on his tweets, Donald Trump mentioned saying that:

“The social network was doing nothing about all of the lies and propaganda being put out by china or the radical Left Democrat party”.

BBC News notes that Twitter had formerly deleted a tweet by Iranian Leader Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. And suspended accounts that are related to Cuban President Raul Castro as well as members of his government.
