Movie Review – Jacob’s Ladder (Mild spoilers)

Jacob’s Ladder might feel trite and predictable to today’s viewers. But this was the inspiration for many elements now considered standard in survival and psychological horror.

Jacob’s Ladder is a movie you’d be implored to examine, if you’re keen on genre movies in any way. It’s a lesson in filming technique, as well as cinematic history, and viewers fond of games like Silent Hill would readily recognise many of the horror elements used in it. At the same time, Jacob’s Ladder is also a warning about the major pitfalls of psychological horror storytelling. Like so many of its successors, the plot quickly turns dawdling, and beyond a point you’d groan for the truth, rather than endure of the protagonist’s suffering. This itself was ultimately redeemed by the movie’s twist ending, which I believe would have been considered creative in its day. Unfortunately, no thanks to movies like Fight Club, this wouldn’t work for today’s audience. Here’s a movie you watch for visual impact, not for impressive storytelling.
