Movie Review – Assassin’s Creed

It’s not an adaptation worthy of the best-selling game franchise. But Assassin’s Creed the movie is far from being too awful to watch.

It’s not an adaptation worthy of the best-selling game franchise. But Assassin’s Creed the movie is far from being unwatchable.

I read so many bad things about Assassin’s Creed, the movie, since the day it hit the screens. For a few days in succession, Flipboard notifications directed me to one condemning review after another. One of these went as far as to describe audience responses as a bloodbath.

Well, the movie is no masterpiece. But it was far from being the worst action film, or worst game adaptation, I’ve watched. Actually, I kind of fail to understand why some reviews described the plot as messy and overplotted. It felt completely the opposite to me, you see. By retaining only the core of the conflict, that of the Assassins’ eternal feud with the Knights Templar, the story is no more than a standard orphan-to-victim-to-hero pseudo saga. You don’t need to work too hard to understand what’s going on. You sit back and enjoy the occasional action sequences. Towards the end, you have the assurance all bad guys are going to get their due deserves. You know the hero is going to go all flashy with his sleek assassin moves and shiny hidden blades.

For me, that’s more than enough for a game to movie adaptation.

Or … Maybe I’m just more inclined to be positive because I’m already familiar with the story of Assassin’s Creed. So the story progression doesn’t confuse me. I also know better than to expect anything greater from such adaptations.
