How To Use *99# Service For Digital Banking And Cashless Payment


*99# is a USSD (Unstructured supplementary data) based mobile banking transaction service. This is most useful service for those who don’t have smart phones and using only basic phones. This service is offered by NPCi (National Payments Corporation of India) together with Banks and TSPs (Telecom service providers).

Anyone who is using mobile phone either basic phone or smart phone could use *99# service for cashless or digital payment against any service or product purchase. This service is not only for cashless payment but this works like a mini bank in your phone. This service works across all GSM phone. To use this service you just need to dial *99# from your mobile phone. After dialing this Number USSD code will start running.

One this everyone need to remember –If you want to use this *99# service then you must register your Mobile Number with your Bank account. You may register your mobile number either through ATM or from Bank directly.

Features Of *99# service
     1.   This service works without internet from any GSM phone.
     2.   You can use this service through dialing of *99# code across all telecom service providers.
     3.   This service is totally free in roaming.
     4.   This service works 24X7, even in holidays too.
     5.   No extra application installation required to run this service.

Services provided by *99# code:
This service enables a mini bank in your mobile phone. You may use various services using this code. Using this service you can transfer funds to:

      ·  From one person to another (P2P) – In this mode a person may transfer fund to another person using MMID and mobile number of beneficiary. One thing remembers mobile number of beneficiary must be linked with his/her bank account.

       · From person to account (P2A) – In this mode of transaction a person may transfer fund using IFSC code and account number of beneficiary.

       ·  From Person to UID (Unique Identification) (P2U) – Person may transfer fund using Aadhaar number of the beneficiary but Aadhaar number must be linked with bank account.

You can also avail some non financial services like;

v  Anyone may check their bank balance if mobile number is linked with bank account.
v  Person can generate mini statement of bank account using mobile number linked with bank account.
v  Show MMID (Mobile Money Transfer) – A user may know their MMID allotted to him/her by banks at the time of mobile banking registration. This is 7 digit code allotted by banks at the time mobile banking registration.
v  Generate MPIN – User may generate their MPIN. MPIN or Mobile PIN is a password that will be used to authenticated banking transaction.
v  Change MPIN – User may change their MPIN using this *99# service.
v  Generate OTP – User may generate one time password to authenticate transaction.

Note:  There is another value added service *99*99# that you can use to know the status of your Aadhaar card. You may also know whether your Aadhaar card is linked with your bank account or not.

Steps for Using *99# Service:
You can only use this service from mobile number which is linked with your bank account. Below are some simple steps to use this service.
§  Dial *99# from your register mobile number.
§  USSD code will start running and you will get welcome to NUUP.
§  After pressing ok welcome screen will appear asking to type 3 Letters of Bank Short Name or First 4 Letters of Bank IFSC or 2 Digit Bank Numeric code (e.g, UTI for Axis Bank, SBI for State Bank of India, PNB for Punjab National Bank).
§  After entering 3 letters of Bank short name, valid IFSC code, or 2 digit Bank numeric codes, a menu with different available services with your Bank will appear on the screen.
1. Account Balance
¨      Type 1 and send you will get available account balance
2. Mini Statement: 
¨      Type 2 for mini statement and send, you’ll get mini statement on the screen.
3. Send Money Using MMID:
¨      Enter 3 for fund transfer using MMID and Mobile number and send.
¨      Subsequent screen will appear asking to enter Beneficiary mobile number, MMID, Amount, and remark (optional).
¨      Enter MPIN and last 4 digit of your account number (optional).
¨      A confirmation screen will appear showing success message.
4. Send Money Using IFSC:
¨      Enter 4 and send for fund transfer using IFSC code.
¨      Next screen will appear asking to enter beneficiary Account number, IFSC code, amount, and optional remark.
¨      Enter MPIN and last 4 digit of your account number (optional).
¨      A confirmation screen will appear showing success message.
5. Fund Transfer Using UID (Aadhaar Number):
¨      Enter 5 and send for fund transfer using beneficiary linked UID.
¨      A screen will appear asking to enter beneficiary Aadhaar Number.
¨      Enter MPIN and last 4 digit of your account number (optional).
¨      A confirmation screen will appear showing success message.
6. Show MMID: 
¨      Enter 6 and send; you’ll get MMID linked with your bank account.
7. MPIN
¨      Enter 7 to change MPIN and send.
¨      Enter Old MPIN space new MPIN and confirm.
¨      A confirmation screen will appear displaying MPIN changed successfully.
8. Generate OTP
¨      Enter 8 and send to generate OTP.
¨      Enter MPIN and 4 digit of your account number (optional) separated with a single space.
¨      A confirmation screen will appear showing OTP generated for required option.

Note: *99# service uses IMPS channel which means immediate fund transfer into beneficiary account so there is no way to cancellation the transaction once initiated. I took reference from NPCi - National Payments Corporation Of India. For more information visit NPCI website.
