Alison Moyet – Devine Intervention

In 1984 I rushed out to by an album entitled Alf.

Up to that point, I had bopped around the dance floors of the home counties, word perfect on such synthpop classics as Don’t Go and Only You.

Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet, collectively know as Yazoo, were big in the early eighties and in 2019, they still rank as one of the UK’s greatest pop duos of all time.

When Yazoo disbanded in 1984, Alison Moyet’s solo career was launched with the release of her album Alf.

Deanne Pearson of Number One said:

“If you want genuine, heartfelt love songs, cries of passion without cliche, look no further than Alf.

The album had its critics too, although it’s hard to believe how they had the balls to knocks someone with such a faultlessly powerful and bluesy contralto voice.

Those critics got it wrong anyway.  Alf reached No 1 in the UK charts as songs like Divine Intervention, All Cried Out and Invisible ingrained themselves into the hearts and minds of an army of loyal fans who have supported her throughout her successful career as a solo artist.

From September through December 2017, Moyet embarked on her first world tour in 30 years in support of her ninth studio album, Other.  And in 2019 she shows no signs of slowing down as she rocked a packed Fort Regent, in Jersey, last night.

Her preferred genre, since Yazoo days has always been electronica and she returned to her roots when she released The Minutes in 2013.  But her 2019 set list includes songs from all her nine albums and a little Yazoo to delight some of the older members of her fanbase.

Performing with backing vocalist and her Musical Director, Sean McGhee and drummer, Paul Jones, Alison Moyet proved she is still a force to be reckoned with.

A committed performer, whose drive and passion for her music resulted in a powerful performance in Jersey last night with fans on their feet and feeling the ages they were in 1984 when a solo Moyet divinely intervened in their music sphere.

She is a brilliant songwriter, with a voice that powers its way through her music that has stood the test of time and expresses her lyrics the Moyet way.
