On this day 54 years ago, Martin Luther King Jnr stood on the steps the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC and delivered a powerful speech about his dream for racial equality to 250,000 euphoric supporters.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

I remember my parents watching the grainy, black and white British TV footage in silence.  I was with them, although I had no idea I was witnessing what would be recorded as one of the greatest speeches of all time.

As a child, his words of wisdom flew over my head, but it was the way he delivered those words, with such passion and conviction that stuck with me until I was old enough to comprehend the significance of his words and the justice he was fighting for in an unjust world.

One of life’s truly great men, cut down in his prime and those in power today should make sure his dream is kept alive.

I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
