Steps Towards Reducing Fuel Consumption of Construction Equipment

Fuel consumption has been a matter of concern not only for Individual or a small contractor but also for large construction companies who owns and deal with heavy Construction Equipment.  They usually spend more on Fuel than the maintenance of their heavy machinery.  The owners of heavy machines worry more when fuel price rise in the global market and they forced to buy the fuel in high rate.

To overcome this problem, many leading construction equipment manufacturing companies have come up with machines which consume less fuel than conventional heavy construction equipment. Companies like JCB, Volvo CE, Caterpillar, Tata Hitachi, CASE, Sany, Komatsu, etc. have started producing fuel-efficient construction equipment to meet the market demand.

However, the prices of fuel-efficient machines are higher.  It is advisable to buy more fuel efficient machines despite it is little costly, as the extra investment will be adjusted later when fuel expenses get reduced.   This is why it has been noticed that contractors now hesitate to invest on machines that consume more fuel.

Recently Caterpillar launched fuel efficient Hydraulic Excavator CAT 320D2 GC, it is equipped with fuel- efficient Cat C4.4ACERT engine and a powerful hydraulic system that uses an energy-saving design for optimum fuel consumption.

JCB India, the country’s leading manufacturer of earthmoving and construction equipment has made newest addition to its excavator portfolio. The company launched JCB 370LC (37T Hydraulic Excavator) at recently concluded Bauma Conexpo India, the excavator is designed to consume less fuel and reduce maintenance costs.  The fuel efficient JCB DieselMAX has been designed for construction equipment that delivers high torque at low engine speeds which along with energy efficient eco hydraulics provide high savings on fuel costs and reduces cost of output.

In recently concluded International trade fair Bauma Conexpo India, Volvo CE displayed its fuel-efficient two D-Series excavators’ 21-ton rated EC210D and 25-ton rated EC250D, which deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency than their predecessors, claims the company.

There are many other models available in the market, which are fuel-efficient.

Even for people who want to buy used construction equipment due to budget constraint, they should prefer the machine that consumes less fuel and machine is maintained properly. Usually, machine which undergoes on regular servicing, consume less fuel which helps you to save your money.

The fuel consumption in your machine also depends on the type of the engine installed in your construction machinery, better the quality of the engine in your construction equipment less fuel it will consume.  In order to save fuel cost and increase fuel efficiency of the machine, many people upgrade their engine to latest one which helps in saving their machine’s fuel consumption.  So it indicates, instead of selling the old machine people rather upgrade the engine which started consuming more fuel, this practice is usually followed by small contractors.

Whoever is planning to buy used/second-hand construction equipment, one must prefer the models which consume less fuel.  The fuel-efficient machines can also be available on the rental basis as many manufacturers started rental services and they provide their machines on rent for short term projects. Various online rental service providers may also provide such machines; one of them is www.equipmentonestop.com which provides various such machines on the rental basis.
