Apple’s new smartphone celebrates the tenth anniversary with big changes

The passing of summer and the evenings drawing in means the approach of a significant annual tech event: the launch of the latest iPhone.

While Apple usually replaces its iconic smartphone each September or October, some new iPhones are more significant releases than others. Indeed, the present iPhone 7 wasn’t considered to offer major improvements over its predecessor, but the arrival of the new model will herald major design changes to mark the tenth anniversary of Apple’s entry into the smartphone market.

What’s in a Name iPhone 7 & iPhone 8?

Firstly, the next iPhone x could comprise three versions to make up the range starting with two ‘cheaper’ models, basically mild upgrades over the apple iPhone 7 likely to be named ‘7S’ and ‘7S Plus’. The flagship model at the top of the range will be an all-new design slated to be christened ‘iPhone 8’.

It may even be that Apple will continue offering the present 7 – at least for a while – as is the case with the 6S and 6S Plus running alongside the present ‘latest’ model 7. This could be tempting for those who might be interested in upgrading if they have an iPhone older than the 7 but can’t justify leaping to the new 8 – especially if there’s a price reduction of the present 7 when the new models arrive.

Another option to secure a cheap iPhone 7 is a refurbished model.

A Case to Answer

Since the last general exterior design change when the iPhone 6 appeared in 2014 successive phones have looked similar, but the 8 will have a major case redesign.

The main obvious difference over the present 7 will be a screen that covers almost the full front of the phone with the glass going edge to edge as with many other smartphone designs such as the Samsung Galaxy. Coupled with a slightly larger phone size, this will give the iPhone 8 a 5.8-inch screen that is larger than not only the standard 7 at 4.7 inches but also the iPhone 7 Plus with its 5.5-inch screen.

The screen type will switch from the current LCD variety to the newer OLED (organic light emitting diode) type that provides improved color rendition, wider viewing angles, and a more vibrant display.

The case back material is likely to switch from the aluminum of the 7 to glass.

Touch ID changes

Another significant change is the move from touch ID on the 7 to face recognition technology. This is partly due to a new ID type being required as the present physical home button on the front bezel will go due to the edge to edge screen of the 8; it will likely be replaced by a virtual home button positioned somewhere on the screen itself.

Other features

Wireless charging

Widely expected to appear as it’s already offered by the iPhone’s key competitors. The likely use of a glass case makes wireless charging even more of a likelihood.

New operating system

The present iOS10 will be replaced by version 11 and is expected to make some key changes such as revising the control panel and upgrading virtual assistant, Siri. Then again users of the current iPhone 7, or those deciding to move to one as discussed above, will be able to run the new iOS11 on their phones so effectively benefitting from some of the ‘new phone’ advances.

Faster performance

Apple gives the iPhone more processing power almost every time a new model appears, so the new A11 chip will offer an upgrade over the already lightning fast A10 chip used in the 7.

Camera

Currently, the iPhone 7 Plus has a dual lens camera while the standard 7 doesn’t; the 8 will feature dual lens photography with the lenses being aligned vertically on the case as opposed to horizontally as is the case with the 7 Plus.

Price difference

Where the 8 will certainly differ markedly to the 7 will be the price; the 8 is likely to be expensive with figures of just shy or even exceeding four figures being predicted. The only present iPhone in this pricing territory is the largest capacity 258GB 7 Plus – and this could be reduced further with potential price cuts when the new model arrives.
