Safeguard Your Business Premises From Burglars

Whilst most criminals are turning digital, this shouldn’t be a reason to lower your defenses against physical theft. If you’ve recently acquired an office, you should put in place a few precautions to ward off burglars – they may come nosing around. Here are a few reliable features that can help deter thieves.

Burglar alarms

All businesses should invest in a burglar alarm. There are various types of alarm – the most basic being key operated. Others may come with a card or a dialed in code entry on top. These are largely door lock sensitive, but you can also get alarms that react when a window in broken or motion sensitive alarms that go off when they detect movement within the building.

When setting the alarm for your premises, you should make any code something that isn’t entirely obvious and only gives the code to specific people who you trust. Like email and computer passwords, the code should be changed regularly so that any previous staff members or people who it may have been leaked to it cannot use it.

Security lighting

Motion sensitive lighting can help guide you and your employees safely out the door after a late shift, but it also has Security applications. Burglars don’t want to be seen in the act. Having motion sensitive lighting outside your office entrance will make this difficult and most likely deter any robber from following through.

Useful for certain businesses, cameras can accurately record any criminal activity that happens outside your premises. Such security can be outsourced to save costs. Make sure to place CCTV strategically – in some cases you may be able to cover multiple entrances from a neighboring building, although you will have to check of course if the owner of this neighboring building is alright with this.

Security guards

Whilst only bigger businesses require full-time security, there may be special events or times of the year when you need to hire temporarily manned security. This could include a conference with important guests or even something casual like a work party where you need to ID guests. Retailers may often employ security guards during the Christmas period when shoplifting is more prevalent. In some cases, you may even just want to invest in security services for key holding.

Obstruct windows

Many thieves will ‘window-shop’ before breaking in. If they can see into your office and see the expensive equipment on offer, they may be more likely to try their luck. If you obstruct the windows, thieves won’t be able to see in and may not risk it as a result. You can obstruct windows simply by putting up curtains or blinds. Or you can place a filing cabinet that will also prevent any burglars from trying to break in this way.
