Surprise! There Isn't a Single Woman on Trump's New 15-Member Economic Advisory Council

In an effort to bolster his policy platform, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced Friday a new 15-member Economic Advisory Council which does not include a single woman.

“Donald J. Trump is also pleased to announce his Economic Advisory team comprised of some of the top economists in the country as well as the most successful industry leaders in finance, real estate and technology,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. Trump was apparently unable to name one successful industry leader in finance, real estate or technology who also happened to be a woman.

As Mic.com’s Emily Cahn points out, the statement comes a day after Trump declined to name any women he would appoint to his cabinet, save his daughter Ivanka Trump—and the woman interviewing him.

“I can tell you everybody would say, ‘Put Ivanka in, put Ivanka in,’ you know that, right?” Trump said told Angelia Savage of First Coast News. “She’s very popular, she’s done very well, and you know Ivanka very well. But there really are so many that are really talented people, like you, you’re so talented, but I don’t know if your viewers know that.”

Despite saying he would be “the best for women,” Trump has a well-documented deficit among female voters. In addition to the many disparaging comments he’s made about various public figures, he also once said of appointing ex-wife Ivana Trump to run his Atlantic City casino, “I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing.”

All things considered, it’s not terribly surprising that Trump would decline to name a female to his flashy new economic advisory council, considering she’s likely someone’s wife, and that’s “a very dangerous thing.” Still, one would hope that Trump could name a single woman he’s willing to take advice from who’s not his daughter or the person immediately in front of him. But alas, here we are.

It’s worth noting that while Trump continues to display a deep-seated ignorance for the value of women when it comes to making important decisions, President Barack Obama penned a deeply personal essay Thursday championing equal opportunity and boldly declaring himself a feminist. And considering Trump's opponent is, in fact, a woman, it’s likely that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton similarly recognizes the importance of including female voices in major policy proposals—but that’s just a hunch.
