How To Track The Whois Inquiries On Your Domain Names

How To Track The Whois Inquiries On Your Domain Names

This is going to be a fairly brief post about something that I’ve always thought about when it comes to Domain Names.

Usually with our Domain names, we always want to know the common metrics:

  • Search Volume
  • CPC
  • Age

Etc…

But I always wanted to know if there was a way to see how many people actually typed your domain in a Whois search, which in my opinion is SUPER IMPORTANT if you are trying to sell domain names.

I ran across a super old post on namepros that answered my question…

You can read the entire post here.

You may have known this tip already but I didn’t. Which is why I am writing about it to share it with anyone else who may not know about the cool feature Godaddy offers!

I followed the tips in the link above and got some cool numbers for the whois searches on a bunch of our domain names. It’s something I didn’t know was possible since no one really talks about it.

I think the first time I heard about gathering information from whois searches was from a domain interview some years back but never looked into it further for some reason or another.

Why are these numbers important? Well they could show…

  • Your domain’s popularity
  • How many people are looking up the owner of YOUR DOMAIN
  • Your weak domains that you may want to drop at one time or another

Just keep in mind, some of these whois “hits” may be BOT or something of that sort. Even if some of the hits are bot traffic, it’s still a cool metric too look at that many people don’t know exist.

I’ve only been able to do this through the Godaddy back office at the moment, I haven’t tried any other registrar. If you know any other registrar that shows this information, let me know!

Did you know about this cool feature? Do you have anything else to share? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
