When you are on the road, wherever in the world you will probably have your cellphone with you. Most of our phones are integrated with many Google applications. Now try these 5 Google applications when travelling (simply install on your phone if you haven’t yet); find a nearby wi-fi hotspot at a bus station or hotel and using them.
You will find that your travels will be more secure, you will learn more and will never get lost.
Google Maps is one of the most used Google applications on my phone. Not only to find places, businesses and landmarks but you can find public transport schedules and traffic advisory. In the navigation mode you will find bus and train stop information (see Bus stops below); and you can drill down into it. It will show you when and where any public transport will be along any route. This makes planning your trip so much easier since you know what time you will be where if you get for instance on that bus. It might not show you all route changes or some construction happening on your route but if everything fails just take Uber. Try the Map application now or go to the online version at www.google.com/maps.
Plus if you are away from an internet connection you can download your maps for offline navigation.
Are you looking at foreign words that you have no idea what they mean. No problemo… Simply activate your Google Translate application and make meaning of foreign words.
You can try typing or saying the word or take a picture of it. It translates into many languages and is very fast. There is also an option to download offline translations packages when you don’t have access to a internet connection. Try the application or online version at translate.google.com.
There is even a Google translator for whole websites. Click here to try it. Look at the website below. I think Google did a good job.
Pictures pictures (Google Photos)
If you are not using Google Photos then you need to rethink your non-syncing ways.
Firstly, this Google applications will save you tons of space on your phone. If you don’t have separate camera on your travels you might be using your phone to take most of your travel pictures. This will put a strain on your phone’s memory even if you have an extension card. Simply sync with Google Photos and free up space. (Personally I freed almost 5 GB in my first sync.)
Secondly, after syncing all your photos are stored in the cloud and if something happen to your phone on your travels then all your photos are safe.
Thirdly, this application is so much better then Facebook or Instagram when it comes to managing your photos. It stores your photos as you took them, does not strip photo information and does not simply share your photos across your friends or acquaintances.
Google Photos lets you manage your photos the way you want. You can set albums, create short animations and videos from your uploads. And yes you can share them if you choose to. The mobile application and desktop versions are full of great features. Try it on your phone or on desktop, simply log in to photos.google.com.
Everybody knows about YouTube. It is not only for people with brand channels but accessible for all of us for free. If you record videos going to events, places or if something weird or wonderful that happens consider sending some of your videos to YouTube. You still have the option to keep your video hidden and private but if you want you can monetise your channel with your videos and share them across the internet and social media.
YouTube also links neatly with your videos on Google Photos. See here to all the upload options. Go to YouTube.com to access your channel. You can also download YouTube Creator Studio on your phone for full channel control.
We all get stuck at an airport for a few hours to spend. If you just want to read and not explore the airport or walk around you can always continue reading your favourite books on phone or tablet in your Google Books application. All your books are synced across all your devices and you can read book offline it you wish. There are a great library of written works that include free classics to the latest books that have just been published. Find your book on https://books.google.com or on your phone application.
And by the way – there are also films and music you can also buy on Google. So you will never be bored…ever.
