God Calls Moses

Moses continues to take care of the flocks of the priest of the region, his father-in-law. His name is Jethro. One day, he leads the flock to the far end of the desert. He comes to Horeb, the mountain of God.

An angel of God appears to Moses. Moses sees a flame in the midst of the Bush. He looks to it and observes that a flame is blazing. But it is not burning the bush.

Moses feels that he should go and see the strange sight. He wants to know why the fire is not burning up the bush.

God sees it and calls out to him from the middle of the bush. Moses responds in the affirmative. God commands him not to come closer. Moses should take off his sandals. The place he stands is holy.

God tells him that he is the God of their ancestors; the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Abraham. Moses is frightened. He covers his face.

Yahweh then continues. He tells him that he has seen the misery of his people in Egypt. He has heard their cry for help because of their taskmasters. God is aware of the sufferings of his people. Yahweh has now come down to save them from the clutches of their Egyptian masters.

God will take the Israelites to a country broad and rich. The country is the home of the Hittites, Canaanites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites. It is a place flowing with milk and honey.

God repeats that the Israelites’ cry for help has reached Him. He has also seen how cruelly Egyptians oppress them.

God wants to send Moses to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of that country.
