Abraham and Abimelech (Continued)

Abimelech summons Abraham and takes him to task. He feels that he has not wronged Abraham in any way. The king wants to know why Abraham brought this guilt upon him and his kingdom. When he insists, Abraham replies that he did it because he felt there was no fear of God in the place. He thought that he will be killed for his wife. Even then, Sarah is Abraham’s sister. She is Abraham’s father’s daughter. It is just that she is not the daughter of his mother.

When God made Abraham wander from his father’s home, he had asked Sarah to do an act of love for him. He wanted her to tell everyone that she is his sister.

The king then presents Abraham with sheep, cattle and male and female slaves. He also gives his wife back to him. He then tells Abraham that his land remains open before him. Abraham can stay wherever he wants.

The king then informs Sarah that he is giving 1000 pieces of silver to her brother Abraham. This should put to rest all the doubts about her for those around her. She has been fully vindicated, the king feels.

Abraham then intercedes for Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls. God heals them so that they can have children. Yahweh had closed the wombs of all the women in the king’s household because of Sarah.
