Hagar (Continued)

The Angel of God finds Hagar near a spring in a desert. The spring is located in the road to Shur.

He reminds her of her identity as Sarai’s slave girl. The angel wants to know where she has come from and where she is going. Hagar replies that she is running away from her mistress Sarai.

The angel asks her to return to her mistress and submit to her. “I shall make your descendants too numerous to be counted,” he adds.

Hagar is now pregnant. She will give birth to a son. She should name him Ishmael. God has heard her cries of distress.

Ishmael will grow up like a wild donkey. His hand will be against those around him. And the hands of those around will be against him. He will live defying all his relatives.

Hagar names the place “El Roi.” She saw the one who sees her. This is the reason the well here is called Lahai Roi. It is still here, between Kadesh and Bered.

Hagar bears a son to Abram. Abram names him Ishmael. Abram is now 86 years of age.
