AN EXPLOSIVE new documentary looking at the close personal relationship between late Pope John Paul II and a married academic has been criticised by the Vatican.
The BBC show is expected to examine the four-year correspondence between the pope and Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka amid speculation the two were in love.
Tymieniecka, a Polish-born American philosopher, translated one of the Pope’s books and according to author John Cornwell, who has written about their relationship, “spent hundreds of hours with him, sometimes with his secretary present, but often alone.”

The BBC Panorama show, The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II, will reveal unseen letters from John Paul II to Tymieniecka, who was married to the Harvard professor Hendrick S Houthakker.
The Vatican has dismissed the documentary as “more smoke than fire”, according to the Guardian.
“It was known that he was friendly with Tymieniecka and Poltawska,” a Vatican official told the paper, referring to a second Polish woman, Wanda Poltawska, who may also feature in the show.
Tymieniecka has previously denied being romantically involved with John Paul II, who was the pope for nearly 27 years before he died in 2005.
