Health | What is Estrogen Dominance & what are the symptoms?

Since few months ago, I didn't feel right.
I felt bloated and moody all the time.
I sounded like as if I had depression, right?
No! Wrong!

Well, guess I have to start sharing from the start.

Before I start sharing about Estrogen Dominance, I should start sharing my allergy.
Yes, allergy!
I had mistaken my DAIRY ALLERGY as LACTOSE INTOLERANCE because doctor told me it is lactose intolerance.
How did I find out about it as allergy? My symptoms.

Common symptoms between these both are: -
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea; sometimes vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Bloating
  • Gas
However, dairy allergy could cause reaction to other parts of our bodies: -
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Swelling, often in the lips and face
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in throat
  • Trouble swallowing
No kidding, I almost got hospitalised because of this.
I remember when I had reaction during my NZ trip with family, my blood pressure dropped drastically and I had problem breathing because of the tightness in throat, along with swelling face and lips, as well as rashes all over my back, palm and feet.

The last time I had reaction was because of a protein bar.
I almost blacked out. No kidding.
Every single time I had reaction, I struggled alone for almost an hour.

Since then, I was heavily relied on soy beans.
Bean curd, Soy Milk, Tempeh and etc, as my vegetarian source of protein.
However, another problem occurred.
I over-consumed Soy.

Some possible side effects of Soy: -
  • Trypsin inhibitors in Soy Products interfere with protein digestion and can lead to disorders of the pancreas.

  • The Hemaglutinin is responsible for clumping of red blood cells together to form clots which can obstruct several body functions.

  • One of the other dangers of soy occurs due to the presence of phytic acid or phytates. It inhibits the absorption of certain essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron.

  • Soy is believed to have a greater adverse effect on the thyroid gland. The phytoestrogens in soy products can cause hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid diseases in people.

  • One of the biggest dangers of soy milk for women is that it is believed to contain phytoestrogens which works in similar way as estrogen (a female hormone) that can aid in menopausal symptoms and may even lead to reproductive disorders.

  • As mentioned above, soy products inhibit the absorption of calcium, this in turn leads to increase in the requirement of vitamin D.

  • Soy foods also contain considerable amounts of aluminum that can lead to several kidney diseases if consumed in large amounts.

  • Those advocating for soy should also be aware of the potential dangers of soy proteins. It is proposed that soy foods inhibit the benefits of other foods and nutrients in the body.

The highlighted side effect lead to today's topic - Estrogen Dominance.

What is Estrogen Dominance?

Women or Men with too much estrogen relative to progesterone.

Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Irregular or otherwise abnormal menstrual periods
  • Bloating (water retention)
  • Breast swelling and tenderness
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Headaches (especially premenstrually)
  • Mood swings (most often irritability and depression)
  • Weight and/or fat gain (particularly around the abdomen and hips)
  • Cold hands and feet (a symptom of thyroid dysfunction)
  • Hair loss
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • Foggy thinking, memory loss
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble sleeping/insomnia
  • PMS
Estrogen dominance has also been linked to allergies, autoimmune disorders, breast cancer, uterine cancer, infertility, ovarian cysts, and increased blood clotting, and is also associated with acceleration of the aging process.

Ways to reduce Estrogen Dominance
  1. Increase nutrients in the diet: Take a high potency multivitamin/mineral combination.
  2. Follow a hormone-balancing diet: Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, adequate protein and moderate amounts of healthy fat.
  3. Remember to get enough fiber. Estrogen is excreted by the bowel; if stool remains in the bowel, estrogen is reabsorbed.
  4. Use transdermal 2% bioidentical progesterone cream: Many of the symptoms of estrogen dominance can be relieved with natural, bioidentical progesterone, available over the counter in a 2% cream (one-quarter teaspoon contains ~20 mg progesterone).
  5. Lose excess body fat and get regular exercise — especially strength training.
  6. Detoxify your liver: Traditional Chinese Medicine explains that menopausal symptoms are caused by blocked liver and kidney chi. This makes sense. The liver acts as a filter, helping us screen out the harmful effects of toxins from our environment and the products we put in our bodies. When the liver has to work hard to eliminate toxins such as alcohol, drugs, caffeine, or environmental agents, the liver’s capacity to cleanse the blood of estrogen is compromised.
  7. Decrease stress: Learn how to say no to excessive demands on your time. Remember, perimenopause is a time to reinvent yourself. This means investing time and energy in yourself, not everyone else.

(Ways I am using as I am already leading a healthier lifestyle)
  1. Cut down on soy products
  2. Consume 2 tablets of Kordel's Vitex supplement once in the morning, before breakfast.
