My Honest Review of Egmont Manuka Honey (2023 Edition)

As a regular user of manuka Honey, I am always on the lookout for new and exciting brands that can satisfy my taste buds while also offering health benefits. Three years ago, I heard about Egmont, a relatively new brand of Manuka honey, and I was immediately intrigued by their attractive introductory price.

Egmont is a family-run beekeeping business that sources their premium Manuka honey from beehives nestled in the South Taranaki rainforest in New Zealand. In addition to their famous Manuka honey, Egmont also offers other delicious honey-based products, such as lozenges, clover honey, and honeycombs.

I still remember the first time I tasted Egmont Manuka Honey. The rich, unique flavor blew me away, and I knew I had to share my experience with others. So, in this blog post, I’ll be giving you my honest thoughts on Egmont manuka honey, covering aspects like its taste, texture, purity, health benefits, and overall worth. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll have a clearer idea of whether this delightful honey is the right choice for you.

My Review of Egmont Manuka Honey

Fortunately, I was able to sample both their UMF 15+ and UMF 20+ varieties. In this evaluation, my main attention is on the UMF15+, which happens to be one of their top-selling honey products.

Taste and Appearance

The honey has a very smooth and rich, semi-thick consistency, exuding an earthy, natural taste that makes it feel like it comes from a remote, untouched part of the world. Its semi-dark yellowish-brown hue adds to its allure and uniqueness.

Though more opaque than I was used to, the honey was irresistibly smooth and offered a mouthwatering caramel-like manuka taste. Unlike the overly sweet, cheap honey you often find in supermarkets, Egmont’s sweetness is just right—not too sweet, but enough to be enjoyable.

I would say the sweetness is about a 7 on a 1-10 scale, striking a perfect balance between being sweet but not overpowering. It’s neither acidic nor sour—just perfect. I’ve tried both the UMF 15+ and UMF 20+ options, and found that the UMF 15+ is slightly sweeter and doesn’t leave a bitter taste at the back of my tongue like the UMF 20+ one does.

Scooping out the honey was a breeze as it wasn’t hard at all, which made for easy spreading and mixing. As a huge fan of this honey, I’ve incorporated it into various dishes and drinks. I love using it on almond butter, banana, and honey sandwiches, as well as adding it to smoothies and oatmeal for an extra dose of natural goodness. However, considering the price, I’m a bit more selective about when and how I use this 8.8 oz jar, especially since it goes quickly in a house of four people.

Grades Available

Egmont manuka honey is available in MGO 50+, UMF 5+, UMF 10+, UMF 15+, UMF 18+, UMF 20+, UMF 23+, and UMF 25+.

MGO 50+ is a multifloral manuka honey, meaning it comes from bees that gather nectar from different types of flowers, including manuka flowers. All the other grades are monofloral, which means they come from bees that exclusively gather nectar from manuka flowers.

UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, which is a quality trademark used to measure the level of antibacterial activity in manuka honey. The higher the UMF rating, the greater the antibacterial activity. UMF 5+ and UMF 10+ are considered low-grade, while UMF 15+, UMF 18+, UMF 20+, UMF 23+, and UMF 25+ are high-grade.

MGO, or methylglyoxal, is another measure of the antibacterial activity in manuka honey. MGO 50+ is the lowest grade available, while MGO 1200+ is the highest.

In my experience, I found that the UMF 15+ and UMF 20+ grades offered a similar taste and texture. However, I did prefer the UMF 20+ in the long run. While the UMF 15+ was more affordable, the UMF 20+ offered a slightly stronger and more distinct manuka flavor.

Whether you prefer multifloral or monofloral honey, or a high or low UMF or MGO rating, there is an Egmont manuka honey that will suit your taste and needs. As someone who has tried and enjoyed different grades, I can attest that each one offers a unique and exceptional honey experience.

Purity and Authenticity

When I first came across Egmont Honey, I was immediately struck by their commitment to maintaining their bee hives in the most pristine locations possible. Nestled deep within the finest manuka forests in the world, their hives are far from any pollutants or contaminants. The fact that they have access to some of the most remote lands in New Zealand, accessible only by helicopter, further solidifies their dedication to producing natural, non-GMO honey.

Whenever I purchase a jar of Egmont Honey, I make sure to check for the UMF Certification logo. This symbol is a clear indicator of the brand’s authenticity, as all their products undergo rigorous testing by the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) Honey Association. Their UMF Licence No. is 1888, and they’re also proud holders of FernMark Licence No. #10009, which further reinforces their dedication to quality and authenticity.

But their dedication to quality doesn’t stop at certifications. Egmont Honey ensures that each new batch of honey is independently tested and confirmed for purity by reputable laboratories and institutes. This level of scrutiny gives me the confidence that I’m always getting the best quality honey with a superior flavor.

Brand Reputation

Founded in 2008, the brand has grown significantly over the years, now owning 4,000 hives and employing a team of skilled full-time beekeepers.

From my own experience, I’ve found that Egmont offers products with higher UMF ratings, which is a great indication of the honey being sourced from bees inhabiting pristine environments. This translates to minimal human interference and pollution, which is not just beneficial for my health, but also for the environment.

The brand’s honey is not only delicious but also has various health applications. I’ve personally used it to heal wounds faster by applying it to a bandage, and I’ve been extremely pleased with the results. Friends have also shared their success stories, such as using it to help with GERD, sore throats, and even eyelid irritations.

Egmont Honey’s customer feedback is a testament to the quality of their honey. With over 500 reviews on Amazon, the majority of customers are highly satisfied with their purchases. This kind of positive feedback is essential when choosing a honey brand to trust.

Even though Egmont Honey’s website boasts full traceability for their honey, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of a QR code or similar information that I’ve seen with other brands. As an eco-conscious consumer, I’m also eager to discover more about their harvesting practices and dedication to sustainability in the future, especially since that information seems to be missing. It’s essential as these aspects are important for environmentally conscious consumers like myself.

Packaging and Size

Upon examining Egmont Honey’s packaging, I must say that it checks off several boxes for me. The BPA-free plastic jar is not only durable but also easy to use, thanks to its screw-on lid and extra seal. The dark packaging ensures that sunlight won’t damage the precious honey contained within.

However, I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed with the jar’s size. At just 8.8oz, which equals about 35 teaspoons of honey, it’s rather small for my family of four. With each of us taking a teaspoon a day, the jar lasts merely 8-9 days. I find myself wishing they offered larger sizes like some other brands.

On a brighter note, Egmont does provide the option of purchasing their honey in 17.6oz jars, as well as in bundles and gift boxes. This makes it a tad more convenient for those of us who consume honey on a daily basis.

As a health-conscious parent, I was delighted to discover that Egmont also offers Manuka honey lollipops and lozenges to support my children’s health and wellness. It’s a comforting thought knowing that even our sweet treats can be beneficial to our well-being.

Price and Value

Discovering Egmont honey has been a financial boon, as it offers some of the most affordable UMF-certified Manuka honey I’ve found.

While their website prices the UMF 15+ Manuka honey at approximately $59.60 for an 8.8oz (250g) jar, I was pleasantly surprised to find it on Amazon for just $36.90. This competitive pricing makes it an attractive option for cost-conscious consumers.

The below chart compares the cost of Egmont Honey’s manuka honey to other popular brands on the market.

Comparing Egmont’s prices to other manuka honey brands, it’s clear that they are quite competitive within the industry. And with the added bonus of coupon codes and discounts for multi-quantity orders from time to time, it’s evident that they prioritize customer satisfaction.
