Last week’s ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which struck out a suit seeking to remove Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State from office has once again butressed the doggedness of the governor.
Ruling on the application filed by an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in the 2015 election, Senator Umaru Dahiru, demanding the removal of Tambuwal as governor on the ground that the primary election that produced him as candidate was not properly conducted.
But in his ruling, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, dismissed the application and equally struck out the motion on notice over abuse of court process. He stated that, “Granting the application will occasion injustice on the part of the APC and Tambuwal because the motion on notice did not intend to cure any misnomer.
In view of the fact that the application is dismissed, the case file has become empty and there is nothing to adjourn for or to be heard; consequently, the case is struck out,” Kolawole said.
For those familiar with the issue, the case to remove Tambuwal had gone through the full legal stretch starting from January 2015, in the High Court to the Supreme Court before it was struck out.
The apex court had in 2016 returned the case to the Federal High Court for fresh trial on the grounds that “there is life” in the case in spite of the conduct of the governorship election that produced Tambuwal. After the legal fireworks, Tambuwal, who bestrode the political space with a unique style of politics, had the last laugh.
Interestingly, the most ironical instance, while the legal battle lasted was that Tambuwal, whose ever-smiling mien is intricately infectious, never stopped providing leadership and good governance in the Caliphate state. Just like he overcame the odds, while serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tambuwal has again dwarfed the intrigues to remove him from office. Indeed, the Matawallen Sokoto is a cat with nine lives.
